GLENDALE, Ariz. -- He took shot after shot in the first half. After one, I wasn't so sure he'd get up.

Colt McCoy is one tough bastard. He showed in the Fiesta Bowl something we all knew which is that he's talented. Now we also see he's tougher than concrete.

I've stated this before and it should be repeated. He'll be a better pro than Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow won't be playing quarterback in the NFL. If I was a pro team, I'd grab McCoy as fast as possible.

The final several minutes of the Fiesta Bowl was typical McCoy. He went 78 yards in 11 plays in just 1:42 and was cool the entire time. "I can't think of a better place to be at that point," he said of the game-winning drive. "I want to be in the last drive, going for a championship."
McCoy wasn't perfect. He tossed an interception in the final seconds of the first half that erased what looked to be a certain touchdown.

He made up for that mistake at the end of the game with that outstanding drive and now goes down as one of the great players in Texas history.

Who'll be pretty good in the pros, too.

Prehist51 - sorry cbs scrambled the formatting on my last post. I'll keep this one short so even you will be able to understand.

1. Insult me all you want, but even you have to admit the Big 12 looked mediocre at best this bowl season.
2. I am an idiot, but I maintain that the SEC is having an off year. Somehow, the conference has performed well during bowl season, if only because they played so many Big 12 opponents.
3. I may be an Idiot, but this year's Florida team doesn't seem as potent as in previous years. Tonight's game was a bit dissappointing for me, because I'm an idiot, and because Oklahomer and McCoy were just so damned ordinary. I may be an idiot, but I really regret the gators didn't play a more deserving team, like USC or Utah, or Ohio State.
4. Hearts out to Mississippi - they played tough all year, and got dis-respected by the BCS folks when they stuck them with Texas Tech.
5. My humbles apologies to Ohio State - apparently I am an idiot, and it turns out that there is a whole conference of teams that is more over-rated - the Big 12!!! Through the Big 12 I have gained a new appreciation of Ohio State, a program that is consistenly among but not quite the best in the land.
6. You can ignore the facts all you want, and you can call me an idiot, but the SEC is a LOT better than the Big 12. A LOT better. Speaking of idiot who left Florida, did you see Stoops about to cry at the end of the game?
7. I am indeed an idiot, tell me again who won the Florida - Oklahomer game?
8. I am an idiot, please tell me who won the Texas Tech - Mississippi game.....
9. I am an idiot, please tell me who score 60 points a game for the past thousand years, but could only manage 14 against Florida (also explain how florida wins without an offensive coordinator) (Oooh, also, how does florida win with an ACC officiating crew)

prehist51: I love you too man! lets go on a date and hold hands!!!

So Mississippi beats TT and TT beat Texas, what does that have to with anything.  Texas beat OU 10 points and OU beat TT 44 points.  AS any knowledeable football person understands, college football games are mutually exclusive form the outcome of any other game.  The fact that Ole Miss beat TT has nothing to do with how Ole Miss would perform against Texas.  We do know that the Ole Miss QB could not make the Texas team as a starting QB.  But the Texas/TT/Ole Miss/ triamgle is not the only comparison.  Lets look at the Ole Miss/Arkansas/Texas triangle.  Oh you don't want to talk about that one do you.

I will say that Texas Tech is co-champion (or something like that) of the Big 12. Just to refresh your memory, Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech finished in a three-way tie. Since they each beat the other in head-to-head meetings, I think it is fair to say they are about evenly matched. The way you Big 12 fans trash Mississippi, you'd think that one of the co-champions of the Big-12 could easily crush, nay absolutely destroy them. But that didn't happen, did it? To the contrary, Mississippi made them look impotent.

What's worse, Texas struggled with the Buckeyes. The game was very much in doubt until the last 2 minutes of the game. The vaunted Texas offense only managed to score 24 points. Texas had their first string offense and defense in all game. Texas almost lost the game - to Ohio State!!!

Since two of the three Big-12 Co-Champions had let-downs in their big games against non-conference foes, what does that mean? I take it to mean that maybe their conference foes were not all they were cracked up to be.... Maybe it is just not that difficult to put 60 points on the bulk of the Big-12.

Believe that there are 12 or so teams in college football this year that is capable of beating anyone on a given day.  I would put Ole Miss in that group.  I think the Rebels are a very good team despite losing 4 games.  They beat two very good teams.  I would also put TT in the group of 12 too.  All this strength of conferences trash talk is nothing more than speculation, there are no facts to support any argument that anyone has to make that their conference is the best.

Luck favors the prepared, cream rises to the top, Blah, blah, blah - pick your metaphor, but good teams are good because they are well coached. That means preparation. Without Coaching and preparation it is difficult to win the "Big" games. TT did beat Texas. They did not beat Oklahoma, they barely beat Baylor (how is that Baylor team doing, by the way), and they either were seriously overrated or seriously choked against Mississippi State. These are not the hallmarks of a "very good team". Rather, these are hallmarks of a flash in the pan. (like USF last year or ECU Pirates this year)

Finally, my opinion on the major conferences is that the SEC is having an off year.  I don't think overall the teams are as good as they normally are. Just look at Auburn and Tennessee - there are quite a few programs in transition. The Big 10 is a solid conference, but the coaching philosophy may be getting a little long in the tooth. The Pac 10 doesn't play any games, so it is tough to say, but USC is definitely a force to be reconded with. The mountain West? I don't have a clue what to say - they don't play anybody, but Utah sure took ala-BAMA to the woodshed. But then again, ala-BAMA looked like crap, and did not seem to be because of anything in particular that Utah did. The Big-12? they aren't looking especially impressive in the post season.

I guess the final word will come tomorrow night when Oklahoma plays Florida. I'll log on after the game so you can lambaste me for having the audacity to be a Gator. I know I can trust you when you say Oklahoma will destroy Florida by 60 or 70 points (you are so much smarter than me), but I'm just that stupid to think the Gators have a slim shot of winning the game.

Hmm, I'm not intelligent enough to discuss such a complicated subject as the "Texas/TT/Ole Miss triangle". Sounds like a bunch of voodoo to me. From this comment alone, it is obvious that your knowledge of football is unsurpassed.

Sunonomo, I love idiots like you.  Your knowledge of football could be put in the ass of a nat and it would bounce around like a BB in a box car.

For others that might not be familar, lets deal a few facts.  Texas beat Arkansas 52-10, and Ole Miss won by a score of 23-21.  Arkansas had close to 400 yds total offense against the great Ole Miss defense and had only 195 yds total against Texas.  Arkansas got their only TD on an 80 yd fumble recovery that was made by Texas third team running back in the last 3 minutes of the game.

So all this talk on message boards about my team can whip your team because Tech had a bad day, or Alabama had a bad day etc, really doesn't hold water.  It is all stupid speculation.  What I do know is that The University of Texas has been the most consistent winning college football over the past 11 years. They have 8 straight 10 or more victory seasons, have won 5 straight bowl games, beat the best team ever in the history of college football on their home field in the 2006 BCS championship game.  Texas has the 3rd highest winning percentage in the history of college football and has the second most victories ever.  They have now won 9 or more games for an unprecented 11 years in a row and the last time they were not ranked in the top 25 teams in the country was the week of Oct 21, 2000.

Just because Texas didn't beat tOSU by 40 points does not mean they are not a good team nor the Big 12 sucks.  tOSU happens to be a prerennial top ten team year in year out.  That is to be respected.  The only thing that matters in football is what happens at the time two teams play.  The fact that Ole Miss beat TT 47-34 does not mean that Ole Miss could have beaten any other team that day or for that matter even beat TT is they played again today.

Colt McCoy will stay for his senior year because he knows that coming out after an impressive season just for the money will never ever be as rewarding and meaningful as finishing off his SENIOR year of Longhorn football with a chance for a national championship and putting a stamp on the claim as the greatest Longhorn quarterback in history.

Going pro this year would be career suicide. Do us all a favor Colt stay in Texas one more year. We Detroiters would hate to see a great career destroyed.

Colt McCoy is one tough bastard.

Nice. Real nice. You have a way with the English language (I'm being sarcastic). What would his mother think if she read your article? And his father for that matter....

He showed in the Fiesta Bowl something we all knew which is that he's talented.

Yes, talented against the most formidable Big Ten defense there is. And he and his vaunted Longhorns scored 24 points. Impressive, most impressive. Seriously, his stats for the season should be adjusted downward for playing in a conference where playing defense is apparently actively discouraged. Did I mention that he only scored 24 points against Ohio State? How is that even possible? Can you say O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D ! ! !

If I was a pro team, I'd grab McCoy as fast as possible.

But if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? Seriously, though, maybe this is why you are whatever you are instead of a pro team. I'm not a pro team either, but Doctor McCoy seems to get awfully flustered by a little pressure. I bet you and he are both glad they didn't have to play a team with a decent defense, like Mississippi - Hey, didn't Texas lose to Texas Tech?

I could be wrong, though (and frequently I am). I never thought Peyton Manning would do anything in the NFL, 'cause he sure didn't do anything at Tennessee when they played the Gators.
