Best College Basketball Game I've Ever Seen

I used to think that the Princeton-Georgetown game in 1989 was the best college basketball game I ever witnessed. The Tigers fought a heavily favored Georgetown team to a draw. That game enhanced the already solid reputation of Princeton coach Pete Carril and introduced Alonzo Mourning to the nation.

Now, after watching Syracuse beat Connecticut in six overtimes -- six freaking overtimes -- the game on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden was better. I don't think I've ever seen anything more dramatic or hard fought in over 20 years of watching the sport.

I'm not sure how these two teams had any energy remaining by the sixth overtime let alone the third or fourth or fifth but they did. Players fouled out, there were sloppy moments at times towards the end but both of those things are expected considering the length of the game.

Is it an overstatement to say this game was one of the better displays of toughness and courage we saw in sports all year? The last time we witnessed something so spectacular was when Michael Phelps won his eight gold medals.

Yes, I'm putting it in that category. Go ahead and fire up the message boards.

We've really seen nothing like this before and I'm not certain what the repercussions will be for either team in the tournament. This is the type of inspirational victory than can push Syracuse far or cause them to be exhausted and falter earlier in the NCAA than expected. My guess: We're going to hear a lot more from this Syracuse team.

Two of the best moments came in the sixth overtime. Connecticut players were still diving on the floor for loose balls and Syracuse made most of its free throws at the end despite being utterly exhausted.

The game was over 3 hours and 40 minutes long and ended well after 1 a.m.

What a game. What an incredible moment in college basketball history.

Jamasta - how bout you play 67 minutes and see if you can make all the free throws Jonny Flynn made.  It was sloppy because both teams were unbelievably exhausted after SIX overtimes.

Great game, yes.  Greatest ever, certainly not.  I went to Syracuse, so if I have any bias, it would be in favor of last night's game.  But in fact, the 1992 Duke-Kentucky game, for the Final Four, is in no danger of being dislodged  from its perch.  It remains the greatest college basketball game ever played.

Best College Basketball Game I've Ever Seen

IF you follow football you've probably heard of "the greatest game ever played",  the 1958 championship game betweeen the colts and the giants.  That was easily one of the sloppiest games i've ever seen.   what makes these game great is that their exciting.   I'm not saying this Uconn Syracuse game was the best i've ever seen but it was exciting.  it was a little sloppy but for the most part both teams played well but neither team was ever able to pull away.  its definately in the conversation of greatest games.

That's because it's probably the only game you've seen.  Please the Syracuse never even led, and second no one cares.

Greatest ever?  I dunno about that.  Best game of the year?  No question!

The game itself just didn't have the importance of a truly epic game, even if both teams played like it did.

I would also give some consideration to Villanova's upset of Georgetown in the 1985 final, as well as NC State in 1983 in the second half coming back to defeat Houston.

Couldn't agree more, Mike. I think this is easily the best game in 17 years, since Duke-Kentucky in 1992.

Best college basketball game since Gonzaga lost to Arizona 96 - 95 in the second round of the 2003 NCAA tournament.

I am sure that he meant it has been in MSG for 27 years.  The first three years it was in the Dome.  Wouldn't it be great if SU came out and beat WVU tonight?

You've got to be kidding. More overtimes does not a "great game" make.

I watched it too, and though it was fun, it was FULL of blunder. Not exactly a clean game at all.

And jeez... a combined 27% shooting from three-point range and UCONN missed 18 of 42 free throws... kinda ugly as well.

Let's not jump on the "greatest game of all time" bandwagon just yet.
