John Daly lawsuit tossed

Now John Daly can return to what he does best: getting cut, getting drunk and getting fat.

Several years ago I wrote a column that called Daly something that was wholly true then and is even more accurate now. I called Daly a repugnant loser who is more scoundrel than hero. I blasted him for his treatment of women and his reckless lifestyle.

He sued me. Just Monday it was announced that a judge threw out the lawsuit. It was the right move because if there is anyone who is lawsuit proof, it's the human car wreck, Daly.

Here's a copy of the summary judgment (note: large PDF file).

The victory is not just one for freedom of speech. Athletes should be held accountable for their deeds just like writers are held accountable for theirs.

Just as all of you are in your everyday lives.

So I'll repeat what I said several years ago.

Daly is a disgraceful human being who, if he were Allen Iverson, would be despised and wouldn't get the dozens of second chances he has received.

I'll be writing more on this topic in the coming months.

What a racist remark.  Well, if you want to play that way.  What about all the black NFL players that get not ONE chance, but two, three, four etc etc.  for actually committing crimes.   Irving, Ray Lewis, Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson.   Well before Pacman Jones and Chris Henry, the NFL had a long history of repeat offenders. Among them: Chiefs cornerback Eric Warfield (three DUI arrests), Chargers defensive lineman Leonardo Carson (four arrests) and Colts cornerback Joseph Jefferson (two DUI arrests, plus a gun charge).

I am NOT a Daly fan.  But you comment about Iverson is a typical black commentator approach.  Everything is racist.  Now in 2009, EVERYTHING is black and white and getting worse.  You want to comment on a slug of a person and golfer, go ahead.  Your right.  But leave your racist baggage at home.

Thanks for allowing me to waste my time reading this article. Who could have ever imagined this would turn into a race issue. Good thing you didn't call Daly a nappy headed ho or you may be job hunting now. Go off on your soapbox about race all you want, but until teammates, friends, owners, etc start holding each other accountable for their actions, this will continue to be a problem.

I'll keep my guns, my freedom, and my money, and you can keep the change.

Don't spread my wealth, spread my work ethic.

How is Iverson a disgrace to his sport?

He single handedly took his team to the NBA finals.

And he gives hope to all us short guys out there that we can ball.

Mr. Freeman... I think there is a reason you don't work for the Florida-Times Union anymore. You need to get your facts straight. Are you perfect? Instead of saying something like you are pleased with the outcome inj the lawsuit you come out and bash JD again... excellent. What are you a 12 year old? JD has issues and yes deserved to be suspended... but have you read anything on him lately? He is working with Rick Smith, stopped drinking, lost 40 pounds and losing more by the day, and according to Smith, is looking better than he has in years and his game is coming around. Oh and while we're on it, lets throw the race card out there... you're a tool. As Mike Gundy said (You know Oklahoma State's football coach... thought I would inform you since you don't seem all that intelligent.) "Get your facts straight! That's why I don't read the newspaper... because it's garbage." And all your material you write, quite frankly, is garbage. Keep up the crappy work.

What value did you think you gained by comparing John Daly to Allen Iverson? Why the race thing again? I noticed you didn't compare John to O. J. why is that?

I've always wanted to see John Daly right-the-ship and succeed in life. And maybe in his own eyes he has the success he wants. But as for me, the only thing he was able to succeed in was losing my support as a fan. So as I read through your article, I thought that your comments, though harsh, were unfortunately true, until the the point where you played the race card. In my opinion, these types of comparisons only serve to perpetuate racism in this country and definitely added no support to the validity of your article. If you want to talk about John Daly then talk about John Daly, but don't disrepect your readers by including a stereotypical comparison to a black person. I noticed you didn't compare John to O.J. Simpson.

How can you defend John Daly?  Daly has wasted so much talent with booze and gambling.  He is a disgrace to golf. Everyone knows it, why do we have to read the same article over and over?

Freeman?  He is disgrace to the low life sports writers of the world.  Is so easy to criticize. Its easy to condem the downtrodden.  Its hard to be creative and write a piece with purpose.

Do these writers even have editors or bosses that they have to answer too?  If they do then those people should be condemed as well - they let this meaningless slamfest get posted.

Hey Freeman. Do you hang out with Rich Gannon at Delaware Alumni parties or

are you not invited because you're only a graduate in your own mind ?
