Jim Baron: Duke is the one

BOSTON -- The Rhode Island basketball coach, Jim Baron, has played three of the four teams in this East regional, and played them close. He lost to Xavier by two points, Villanova by 13 and Duke by three. He knows these teams well.

Baron obviously has great respect for all of the teams but one, to him, stands out. When I asked Baron which team of the four in the regional was the best, he didn't hesitate.

"In my opinion it's Duke," Baron said. "I picked them to make the Final Four at the beginning of the year and I'm sticking to that."

Two things Baron likes about Duke. He says forward Kyle Singler reminds him of John Havlicek which is high praise.

Baron also believes that Duke is playing with more passion right now than the other teams. "They're playing with a sense of urgency that I like," said Baron.

We'll see if Baron is correct. Since he's played all of these teams, I wouldn't pick against him.

well said, duke is overrated as is the entire acc. the only team i even have a little fear of is unc. the elite eight looks like 5 parts big east, 2 parts big 12 and a sprinkle of acc.

Nice prediction Baron...laughing my arse off right now. That game was not even close...NOVA pounded Duke just like I said. PITT versus Villanova on Saturday will be a war. Good night, peeps.

Duke haters amaze me.  They aren't always the greatest athletes but they are required to actually have good grades, SATs, go to class and do their own work while playing in a competive conference.  They are in the semi-sweet 16 and have beaten some teams in the 16. Duke is not UCONNvict.  However crappy the few lines in the "article" were, it is interesting to hear what other coaches who have played these teams think.  Unlike us, they actually are basketball professionals.  Haters, get laid.

I am not confused....I watched the game Duke beat Rhode Island.  You are confused; I was simply stating despite getting the short end of the stick against Duke when it came to free throw attempts, whistles, e(tc. that Rhode Island blew a big lead in game they should have won.  What I meant to do by that was discredit the opinion of a guy who in my opinion) coached a team who made a great effort on the road in a hostile environment and almost pulled off a huge win.  The point is that since his team was sucessful against Duke he should know what it takes to beat Duke and realize that Villanova has it and has it big time.  He never got close against Villanova and he should know first hand that since his team got pounded by Villanova, they are probably better than he wants to admit and potentially better than Duke.

I never said Rhode Island was not a quality team.  In fact, short of a loss in the A-10 tournament to Duquesne, I thought they deserved to get the Big Dance.  I am not saying that Rhode Island is inferior to Duke, in fact just the opposite, which is why I find Baron's comments so inconceivable.  I would not be surprised if Duke made the Final Four, but I am surprised that Baron called it and that Freeman is using his quote in this BLOG (not article).

I agree, Baron does have a right to an opinion just like I have a right to destroy it and just like you have a right to open your mouth and accuse me of being wrong and just like I have a right to accuse you of being a dumb homer who just signed up for CBS today probably since you were trolled off on another profile for being an idiot.  Pitt beat UCONN only a few short weeks ago, and you have the audacity to say they are fading?  I think it is more likely that Oklahoma State was peaking at the right time and pushed Pitt to the limit.  Give some credit to the Cowboys who have a solid program and a nice group of tough kids for taking it with all their might against the Panthers despite losing in the end.  Remember that these teams are not here for warm-up games for the number one seeds...they are there to win the game and advance.  Xavier did not exactly dominate that 12 seed Wisconsin in their match-up.  Last I checked Oklahoma State was beating Oklahoma late in the year while Wisconsin was getting throttled by Ohio State.  No contest Oklahoma State is better than the Badgers.

Rag on PITT, jump on the hater bandwagon, do whatever gets your rocks off.  I will seek you out tomorrow and personally deliver you a slice of humble pie once the dust has settled and you learn that I dominated you in this argument just like I dominate Freeman on the reg.  Freeman will not even retort my comments because he knows I am right and he is the real one that is fading and underachieving.

Finally, anyone who suggests Singler has ANY similarities or mentions him in the same sentence as John Havlicek is a dope and should be trolled off this website.

Baron simply drew a similarity between Singler and Havlicek.

You're a bit confused Delta - Apparently you didn't watch the same game that I did when Duke beat RIU.  Duke played great, but so did RI - getting to the FT line more often is a sign of simply being better at drawing fouls.  RI was a quality team this year - though they lost to Xavier, Nova, and Duke, they played great in all three games. Most of their losses were close ones to great teams (including Penn State). What I mean to say is that you are wrong if you think that a close call with RI is enough to impede Duke's trip to the Final Four.

Baron has a right to have an opinion on who is playing with more passion.  Just like you have the right to say Pitt has more passion - but you're wrong.  Pitt has been fading and I'm putting money on Xavier to pull off the win; not because the musketeers have a better program, but because Pitt has been underachieving thus far in the tournament.

Ok.  What's up with Freeman?  He goes out of his way to bash Tyler Hansbrough for no reason at all and now when it comes to Duke, he gives credence to a coach who's team is/was in the NIT.  What the heck is wrong with this guy?  The only thing  you have to do to Duke is run, run, run, and all those 3's that they take will be off the mark.  Don't believe, look at both North Carolina games and you will see.

I admit, Duke is playing better than they have, and I can't deny that, but Kyle Singler is the next John Havlicek and you have Coack K. talking about Jon Scheyer making Magic Johnson plays?  I mean, c'mon here.  This love fest with Duke must stop.  I can't understand why Freeman had an hate article about this love fest with TH, however, he says nothing about this sickening and unbearable comparisons of Duke and their players.

If it was any other ACC team, I would root for the ACC team, but I hope Villanova wins so the order of basketball is set straight again, with Duke unable to get past the Sweet Sixteen again since '04.  And I hope North Carolina wins it all so Freeman can curl up in a fetal position and hold his hands to his eyes and ears because Tyler Hansbrough would be honored(rightfully so) by the media and people can say how much TH willed his team to a National Championship, blah blah.  Freeman would go nuts, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Pathetic article Freeman
