Cutler blows off Broncos players

Posted on: April 2, 2009 9:33 pm

When the Denver Broncos stated publicly several days ago that they were going to attempt to trade Jay Cutler, several Broncos players said they reached out to Cutler. They called. He didn't return their calls.

Some tried again. Some tried for several days. Nothing. Cutler blew them off, according to several NFL sources.

"Jay just sort of disappeared," said one Broncos player. "None of the team leaders could reach him."

Maybe once Cutler knew he was being traded, he didn't care. But it's an odd approach for Cutler to take in what was truly an odd last few weeks for Cutler and the team.

It's one thing for Cutler to stop speaking to management. It's another to apparently not return the calls of fellow NFL players.

One player said that some of the Broncos considered Cutler a friend and thought it was extremely bizarre he didn't get back to them.

Were the players I spoke to complaining? No. They like Cutler. They were just making an observation and saying they had rarely seen a player do anything like this.

They just thought it was very...different.

Considering what Chicago gave up to get Cutler, it's a tremendous risk trading for him, especially since Cutler is apparently extremely thin skinned and a tad odd.

The Bears now have one talented -- but extremely weird -- quarterback on their team.

Good luck, Chicago.

Freeman probably had to promise anonymity to get that quote. I can't fault him there. That said, Chicago came up big on this deal and Denver looks awful.

Cutler blows off Broncos players

Cutler is NO Pro Bowl quarterback. There should have been at least three other quarterbacks voted ahead of Cutler. Phil Rivers, Big Ben, and Matt Cassel (McDaniels' Protege) all better qbs than Cutler. Ill even go as far as to say Chad Pennington, with what he did to help turn the Dolphins around, maybe should have been there over Cutler. I was at that Pro Bowl, and I know that not every player takes the Pro Bowl as seriously as they do regular games, but Cutler blew that game for the AFC by throwing a dumb pass that was picked off by a d-lineman.

And for all of you that DO argue that the Pro Bowl is just that , a game that the players don't take seriously, than don't put that title on Cutler's name like he was the MVP of the season or the Super Bowl.He showed he is mistaken prone in that game, just like he did over and over in the season.

Cutler benefited from a great line that only allowed his butt to be sacked 12 times in the whole season. He benefited from monster talented payers like Marshall, Royal, and Stokely. Even though the Broncos went through a lot of different rbs, they still put up more yards per carry then the Bears. And he also benefited from Shannahan, who gave into Cutler for everything, let him take A LOT of risks, and air the ball out a billion times a game. I admit the Broncos D was horrible. But what about the games, 2nd raider game and carolina game, where Cutler only posted 10 points with the talent around him. Or the Patriots game, where Mcdaniels got to see first hand, where he only posted 7. The defense did blow it a lot of the times, but there where other games such as those where Cutler didn't do anything either.

Cutler might become an elite qb one day, or he may not, but as of right now he is nowhere near elite. No where near Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Big Ben. He can't even keep up with Philip Rivers. He still needs a lot of tutoring and coaching so that he can learn and cut down on the mistakes. He was given a lot of time behind a great o-line and still threw so many picks. I hope he does well in the future and I hope the Broncos make out too, but until time proves anything.. don't talk about Cutler being in the same category as the elite qbs in this league, becuase he is NOT! Peace!

Cite your sources, Freeman, otherwise you're just spouting bull like Prisco and Judge.

Even if Cutler is weird--and he's not--the Bears should be able to adjust.  See also the last quality QB they've had--Jim McMahon.

Cutler would have gone to Tampa Bay, not the Chiefs.  It was a three way deal....

Give me a break dude.  Do you actually think there is some conspiracy in the NFL keeping black QBs out?  Talk about paranoid.  You expect everyone to just bend over and let you play the most important position in the NFL just because you're black?  How is THAT not racism?!  You were not a slave and neither is anyone else in this country.  Please stop spreading the very disease you claim to be against.

When r u Cutler apologists going to give it up?

He's jackass.  He's immature, he's a punk, this was mostly his fault, he could have acted like a professional, adult anything other than what he did.

You all want to blame his agent, new coach, team owner, now journalists, i even read one posts where one moron wanted to blame some hypothetical teammate!  Are you joking?

Get over it. Deal with it.  Actual important things in your life will happen and you'll need to be able to recognize stupid when you see it so let this help you out.

I agreet that Cutler is more to blame for what's happened in Denver, but I have to say something about those that compare him to Jeff George.  They only have two things in common, being a cry baby and talent.  The difference between the two is execution.  Let's take a look at where Jeff George was in his third year compared to Cutler's third year.

George  (10 games) %Comp 54.6%,  1,963 yards,  7 TDs, 15 INTs

Cutler (16 Games) %Comp 62.3%,  4,526 yards,  25 TDs, 18 INTs

There is no comparison!  There's no doubt that Cutler has some growning up to do.  However you're kidding yourself if you think he's seen his last ProBowl or will never see, much less win in the playoffs.

Cutler blows off Broncos players

I wish I could say that I'm surprised by this, but that's the kind of immature, selfish, spoiled brat that Cutler is.  As a Bronco fan, I was hugely disappointed when the McDaniel-Cutler situation occurred.  Cutler has an enormous amount of talent, and I thought that he'd bring the Broncos back to the good old days.  But as the situation unfolded, it became more and more apparent that Cutler lives in a fantasy world.  I mean, the guy plays in the NFL, and in the NFL, players get traded sometimes, and trade talks are just part of the business.  As head coach, McDaniel has to at least explore all possibilities, even if nothing comes of it.  This was too much for little Jay to take.  The thing is, we've had indications that he was more like Jeff George than John Elway.  Cutler had a Monday night show here in Denver, and without fail, he was a no-show for his own show following every Bronco loss.  And whenever he was questioned about rivalries with the Raiders and the Chiefs, he said that those rivalries didn't mean that much to him. Last week, Cutler formally demanded a trade, but when the Broncos decided to accomodate him, he acted like his feelings were hurt, and claimed that a trade wasn't what he wanted. While I'm not very impressed with the deal the Broncos made with the Bears, I think that all in all, it's better to be a Bronco fan today than a Bear fan.  Good luck Chicago, you're gonna need it.

Cutler blows off Broncos players

are you freaking kidding me?

Let's start with the fact that none of the guys writing opinion pieces online are journalists.  They're bloggers and paid to give their opinion.

Next, this whole thing happened because of unnamed sources.  Get off Cutler's jock long enough to accept that the only thing you heard publicly and verifiably came from the Broncos and everyone of those statements was 'we want Jay to be our QB'.  All the unnamed sources invariably came out with 'Cutler is unhappy', 'Cutler wants out', 'Cutler is this, Cutler is that'.  Who are those unnamed sources?  His agent maybe?  His dad?  His best friend?  I won't deny McDaniels put his foot in it at the start but since then the only VERIFIABLE info you have is coming from the Broncos.  This was orchestrated by Cutler and his bum of an agent right down to the damage control two days ago about Jay not having heard from the Broncos at all.  This was as much about money as anything- Cook doesn't get paid if Jay doesn't and most of the money from this contract is already in Cutlers pocket.

I was a huge Cutler fan and a lifelong Bronco fan.  I'm still a Bronco fan.  Cutler is a punk

Cutler blows off Broncos players

The first clue that Cutler is weird is when he said he had a stronger arm than Elway....talk about a red flag warning!!
