It's over and it wasn't close.

My score: 118-109.

That might be generous.

This was a classic mismatch of speed versus a fighter who has none.

Mayweather dominated from start to finish.

He's the best in the business right now.

*     *     *

Round seven was close so I gave it to Marquez.

Eight went to Mayweather.

In in the ninth Mayweather connected with a solid combination and then hit three straight jabs.

This fight is over unless Marquez knocks Mayweather out.

*    *     *

Marquez now has blood around that right eye and also his nose. Marquez is becoming more aggressive but he's failing to seriously connect. I've got Mayweather winning the fifth round, 10-8.

Marquez is brutally tough and deserves a great deal of respect but he doesn't possess the quickness and I've got Mayweather winning 10-9, 10-8, 10-9, 9-10, 10-8, 10-9.

*     *     *

Marquez won his first round, the fourth, but it came with a price. There's blood over his right eye.

*     *     *

Right now I've got Mayweather winning every round going 10-9, 10-8, 10-9.

*   *   *

The fight begins and Mayweather connects to the head of Marquez very quickly. Marquez's forehead area is very red but from ringside it's hard to tell if that's blood.

In the second round loud chants of "Marquez! Marquez! break out.

Then Marquez goes down.

You could see it coming. Mayweather is too quick and he got a nice left hook that hit Marquez hard and Marquez went to the canvas.

In the HBO series that followed the training of the two boxers, the Marquez camp tried to duplicate Mayweather's movements. The problem is no one on the planet can duplicate his quickness.

*     *     *

This is clearly a pro-Marquez crowd.

And the atmosphere here is quite electric. Can't think of a better word.

Plus Michael Buffer looks like he hasn't aged in 30 years.

Mayweather entered the arena actually rather subdued for him. It reaffirms the notion that Mayweather is a clown outside of the ring but a great professional inside of it.

Mayweather just hugged his father.

*     *     *

Another great end to a fight. The John-Juarez fight just ended and John was declared the unanimous winner.

The main event is next.

Diddy is here so now we can start.

*     *     *

A woman in the stands literally showed up dressed as a nurse. Not kidding. Guess she figures Marquez will need help in his corner.

*     *     *

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is here.

Best Schwarzenegger joke ever came from Conan O'Brien: "In a speech this week, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said America needs to work together to conserve oil. Then Arnold lit a cigar and drove over the crowd in his hummer."

*     *     *

We're getting close to Mayweather and Marquez. Right now Chris John from Jakarta and Rocky Juarez from Texas are fighting for the WBA featherweight title.

The arena is about 90 percent full as people begin trickling inside.

Celebrity sightings have been few. We're all waiting for Doyel to show up.

With a mohawk.

*     *     *

Katsidis and Escobedo received a nice ovation for what was a 12 round beauty won by Katsidis. It was the kind of fight that again demonstrates why the sport is both so elegant and brutal. Both men survived ugly beatings and emerged with bruised and bloodied faces.

*     *     *

Michael Katsidis and Vicente Escobedo are fighting for the WBO interim lightweight title and while this fight lacks the big punches of the previous undercard bouts it is highly technical and still entertaining. Katsidis, from Australia, is doing something repeatedly that has yet to be caught by the referee: tossing a well placed and inconspicuous elbow into the ribs of Escobedo.

*     *     *

Both Mayweather and Marquez just arrived at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

*     *     *

This is a brutal and hornery crowd even for the fights on the undercard.

When Cruz was hit in the groin area -- hate when that happens -- he momentarily stopped and looked at the referee, as in, "Dude, I just got hit in the ----."

The referee ignored him and the crowd started booing.

Sorry but even the toughest man alive gets felled when hit there.

And Cruz just got knocked out in the fifth round with a vicious and textbook right uppercut.

So Lock is the NABO featherweight champion.

This fight is typical of what's wrong with boxing because while hardcore boxing fans know what the NABO is, most casual fans have no clue.

*     *     *

The vacant NABO featherweight title fight between Orlando Cruz and Cornelius Lock started with a flurry. Cruz took a gamble and threw a wild hard right that missed. Lock took advantage and knocked Cruz down with a right of his own. It was a beautiful punch.

And down went Cruz.

The fight settled down as it entered the third round and Cruz looked fine.

LAS VEGAS -- First celebrity sighting of the night: Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico.

Okay, so he's technically not a celebrity but close enough.

*     *     *

LAS VEGAS -- On one of the undercard bouts fighter Said Ouali knocked down Francisco Rios five times.

Then the fight was stopped.

Not sure what took so long.

Was the referee waiting for lucky No. 6?

LAS VEGAS -- Please be careful when reading this blog. Keep your hands up and for God's sake protect your groin.

I'm at the Mayweather-Marquez fight. Only in boxing can two grown men weigh 140-something pounds and be overweight.

The blog will update periodically until the fight begins and then constantly throughout the fight followed by the happy ending which will be my column.

Keep reading. I'll keep writing.

Hopefully I won't pass out before my 5 a.m. flight to Dallas for Cowboys-Giants.

The initial televised undercard fight between featherweights Orlando Cruz and Cornelius Lock should start soon.

Now that I've answered your question you must sing the 49ers fight song.
