Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will announce his retirement on Tuesday morning barring a last minute change of heart, a school official told CBSSports.com.

Both Bowden and the school wanted to officially remain tight lipped on Monday night out of respect for Bowden.

But it's expected that unless Bowden decides at the last minute to stay (which is possible but highly unlikely) his retirement will be announced on Tuesday. The announcement will come as some sort of statement from the school.

Bowden, a source said, has reluctantly come to the realization that it's time to move on.

Bowden won two national titles but this past season lost six games for the third time in four seasons.

Bobby Bowden

How many people think Jimbo was pretty much running the team anyways and there won't be that much difference except on D where they are making a change. Not disrespecting andrews but he fell behind the times so unless someone can help there D step up, i see no differences. C'mon, they turn down Jeff Demps and don't pursue the pouncey's (lifelong FSU fans, till now im sure) effectively enough to land them, i don't think that was Bobby people.

All I know is Jimbo Fisher better turn things around in a hurry, otherwise everybody else will use this as the blueprint for "how not to" use a coach in waiting.  I will miss Bobby patrolling the sidelines.  It's awfully hard to be the man to replace the man.  I can imagine if Fisher goes 6-6 next year, firejimbofisher.com will be up and running quickly.

Bobby Bowden

Kudos to Coach Bowden, his family, staff, and all his current and former players.  He's been accused of being a lot of things over the years, but he certainly didn't win all those games on luck.  His FSU resume up till 2000 will likely never be matched.  It takes a remarkable coach to make a tough call like this.  I know it's apples to oranges, but the extra year or two Hayden Fry stayed on at Iowa set the program back.

I had an oppurtunity to see Va Tech at FSU last year....great fans, great atmosphere, great tradition.  Coach Bowden has a lot to be thankful for; afterall it's the house he built.  There is still a ton of talent on that team, and they'll only be stonger next year because of his decisions.

Bobby Bowden

As a Gator fan I was hoping Bowden would stay around for a few more years. However, I have to say I miss the days when Florida vs. Florida State was the game of the year. Bowden was a class act but he's not the coach he once was and it seemed like he could not get grasp that concept. Bowden did build FSU but that certainly does not give him the right to let the program slip away. Thus, I find it funny when FSU fans say he should be able to leave when he wants. So based on that logic would FSU fans let this demise go on indefinitely. Would they be cool with a sub .500 season or 1-2-3 win season? Moreover, please don't give me the JoePa rational b/c Penn St is in a lot better state than FSU.

Bobby Bowden

I'm a Joe Pa man, but I have all the respect in the world for Bobby Bowden. It's too bad that he couldn't go out on a higher note. College football will not be the same without you Coach, enjoy your free time and thank you for all of the memories.

What kind of stupid reporting is this?

This article basically says that Bobby Bowden will retire unless he doesn't.  Freeman is giving himself a huge out.  Look, either you have a story or you don't.  If you're not all that sure about your source, then you've just written a non-story.  Good grief.  Freeman must have skipped out on another journalism class.

Bobby Bowden

How many untold scandals are out there that have yet to be told regarding Bowden and his program...I know there are many that will come out, it's hard to believe the cheating scandal is the only one....Bowden's 80 years old, he needs to go away....You can say he turned around the program, but realiztically any decent size school in Florida should have a good program these days...South Florida has surpassed FSU and it's time for Bowden to go and save face..

Bobby Bowden

Like most people I have great respect for Bobby Bowden, but its just time for him to go. This uncertainty is not helping Jimbo Fisher get started on what he'd like to do as head coach. Time is critical in college football, and Bobby Bowden at this point is just wasting time. Sorry old timer, but Joe Pa looks like he's going to hold on to the record.

You have done so much for FSU, Coach Bowden. Now do the right thing and step aside and let the new man get started as the official coach!

Bobby Bowden lost my respect

I am an FSU grad and once worshipped the man, but Bowden has lost my respect in recent years.  He selfishly circumvented the state nepotism rules to make his unqualified son Offensive Coordinator.  He had no right to make this move and, in the process, begin to bring down this once great program.  I am tired of old coaches selfishly staying well past their prime simply because they will be bored in retirement.  I hope Paterno follows Bobby into retirement.  It is time to give some young coaches a shot.
