The lesson of Mike Leach

This story is about power.

It's about university presidents tiring of the God-like powers of football coaches and trying to wrestle some of it back.

That was the case with Mark Mangino at Kansas and it's the same now with Leach. Maybe Leach is the cad he's supposed to be or maybe this entire episode is blown completely out of proportion. I'm not sure. (ESPN actually had on a reporter that defended Leach but the reporter is writing a book with Leach. Not exactly appropriate, eh?)

But I truly think the Mangino and Leach cases are about schools using these accusations as excuses to dump coaches who were getting a little too full of themselves.

Mangino and Leach were both arrogant jerks at times and their firing was their respective schools saying: we're going to demonstrate who really has the power and trust us it's not you.

So they were gone.

The way Leach acted in the end, to me, justifies his dismissal. He sent out his lawyers and sycophants and attacked the player as a soft crybaby. Those tactics were somewhat cowardly.

But mostly this is all about the school flexing its muscle. They did and Leach is now gone.

The lesson of Mike Leach

I hope Mike Leach cherry picks his best players/recruites to follow him to his next (bigger/better) opportunity. Texas Tech should just get it over with and make it official. Name Adam James the incoming wide recievers coach & starting wide-out AND Craig James Assistant Athletic Director (overseeing football operations.)

Bill Belichek, Bill Parcells, Eric Mangini, Steve Spurier, Nick Saban...the list goes on and on.  Point is you don't get to be a head coach if you're not to some degree an arrogant jerk.  The Bobby Bowden's of the world are extremely rare.  Being a coach is just like being the president of a company, you didn't get there if you weren't willing to step on some toes.

If arrogant jerk is a reason for termination, we may as well give up sports.

The lesson of Mike Leach

Don't forget ... Craig James was part of Stolen Money University, the only program to ever get the death penalty. HIS character is definitely in question as he was part of the cheating then. So his prima donna son doesn't get treated with kid gloves by Leach, so what? The fact is, Leach probably would have already kicked the kid out of the program if not for the backlash he would have had to deal with at the hands of Daddy and ESPN. Oh well. It was inevitable, anyway. ESPN should quietly get rid of James this next off season and daddy's wimpy boy needs to go sell insurance or work for an investment firm doing nothing but losing other people's money ... his inevitable fate anyway.

Dear CBS, I will accept a negative score on this...

Freeman, you are by far the worst sportswriter I've ever had the displeasure of reading.  This article has ZERO substance to it.

Freeman this article is completely ridiculous and it shows how the ESPN gang is ganing up to protect one of thier own.

James should be shown the door at ESPN and Leach should be given an appology.

The lesson of Mike Leach

Well Texas Tech/Kansas doesn't need to worry about egos anymore, both programs just went down the crapper.

Craig James is the real coward

Leach denied James' request for a transfer to SMU. So, Adam quit on the team and then Craig used his bully pulpit to have Leach fired when Leach did as any coach would have done with someone who quit on the team but his behind a doctor's letter to keep his scholarship.

Notice how Adam's concussion miraculously healed in time for the flight to San Antonio.
