We now have a winner for Greatest Ego of All Time.

There's only one choice. There will always be only one choice.

LeFavre James.

LeFavre is apparently holding a primetime news conference on ESPN on Thursday night. We'll put aside for a moment that a news organization is allowing itself to be pimped out by LeFavre.

We'll instead focus on the grand, gigantic, Jupiter-sized ego of James. This is one of the most ridiculous things ever done by a professional athlete and that's saying something.

I'm on record stating it's a good thing for James and the other free agents to make as much money as possible. But this is going too far.

James isn't in high school announcing he's going to Florida State. He's a professional athlete, a grown man, and this reeks of horrid ego and childish insecurities.

James is out of control. He will lose the support of a great many people for this and across the NBA players will laugh at him. They'll shake their heads and laugh at him.

All this for a guy who is ringless.

Good luck, LeFavre.

Should we get you some makeup for your primetime appearance?

the logic on your post bastian makes NO sense.  Why attack Freeman?  wow and you are who? Maybe I can take this a step further and say you attack Freeman because you wish you were him :)

Who cares...  This is a non-story and this is a silly article.  It seems more reasonable that James would hold a press conference to announce this than some high schoold junior announcing where he is going to college.  This is hardly 'out of control'.  Its mostly hyperbole on the part of the author.

I'm enjoying reading these posts from those of you that are saying that the Media and not LeBron are responsible for, not only his ego, but this rediculous broadcast special as well.  Someone like LeBron James not only has an agent, a lawyer, a financial consultant, and an accountant, but a PUBLIC RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE as well.  This is the person  (many people in most cases) that pulls all the strings when it comes to what he does off the court.  Any commercial, endorsment, or other endeavor goes through these people.  All of those "sources" that scroll across the bottom of the screen are coming right from these people.  And why?  It's their job to make sure he remains in the public eye.  All ESPN, or any other sports outlet is doing is reporting sports news which is their duty as sports reporters.  The size of LBJ's ego is not anyone's doing but his own, and this crazy announcement is nothing more than a PR stunt to keep him at the top of the sporting public's interest.  Anyone that thinks he has no control over it is kidding themselves.  Of course professional athlete's have huge ego's.  They all do, it's the nature of the beast.  But this goes beyond that.  And don't think for a second it was LeBrons idea to donate any money to the BGCA, this is what his PR people do, they have him do something absurd like this to keep him in the public eye, and then come up with an idea for him to donate money to a charity, thus making the millions of sheep in the country come to defend him when a sportswriter like Mr. Freeman dares to bash him for it.

I think it is going to start with a highlight montage of James, then strangely transition to a montage of The Shot, The Drive, The Fumble, the Ravens winning the SB, etc. and finish with James taking of his shirt to reveal the Jersey of either the Bulls or the Nuggets, and him laughing maniacally.  Or maybe I have just been watching too much WWE...

While I completely agree with the author that this stunt James is pulling is the sign of an athlete with a distinct absence of humility, class, and respect for the game; one can hardly blame LeBron for becoming that classless self-centered egomaniac.

Here's a guy who was recruited by shoe companies before he was a junior in high school.  Here's a guy who was lionized as the NBA's next big thing before he was a senior in high school.  Here's a guy whose high school games were televised pay-per-view and on ESPN2.  Honestly, how can the media sit there in their ivory towers as sole arbiters of all that is good and decent in sports when they bear a large responsibility for turning James, and other athletes like him, into the classless bozos to whom publicity and self-interest trumps the good of the team.

Yeah, he could have chosen the path of righteousness and behaved with some grace and humility.  He could have looked at the past and looked at Magic and Bird to see how a champion should behave.  He didn't though.  Then again, Bird and Magic weren't courted by Converse while in high school, and neither was touted as the saviours of the NBA (arguably, a title they rightfully deserve) when they were drafted.

It's a great scam the media has running.  Make money and get viewers by building the icon, then make money and get viewers by razing that same icon.

Spare us the sanctimony.

Part of me wonders if he'd really go on TV to spend an hour breaking up with the Cavaliers.
Im a Clevelander & Cavs fan & do think the way hes going about this is ridiculous. Just quietly sign on the dotted line & be done with it. All we hear on the news revolves around LBJ & its getting more then a little old already

I think Extreme said it best:

Hey kid, you're Mr. IT
Inch by inch a little bit
Stepping on the little people
Like you don't even give a s**t
Hey kid, you have it all
Standing proud on top of the world
Don't you know the bigger they come
The harder they must all fall

We think your head is getting
Bigger and bigger and bigger
We think you should be taught
Some manners, manners, manners

Hey kid, some good advice
To bring your britches down to size
Some modesty would suit you better
So why don't you give it a try

For those of you who are praising him for giving the $$ to the Boys and Girls club, do you HONESTLY think that was his idea?  It's just PR for crying out loud.  He doesn't care about them, he cares about himself.  TYPICAL NBA.  "Me first, Me Second, Me ONLY"

Hope he breaks his ankle stepping off the podium and is out for a year.

Yes..he really does have to inked on his back.  Even better is that Nike is thinking about changing the logo from the famous Jordan stretched out dunk to LeBron dunking.  This guy has been in the league for seven years and he has 20 different kinds of shoes.  Seriously I am not good at basketball.  I can shoot free throws like a champ and I play a mean defense, otherwise I am useless.  These shoes will not make me better, they will just want me to beat up someone for smudging my kicks.

Totally agree.  Even as a diehard Knicks fan, I don't any longer want the dude in NYC.  Let him join Miami: a championship in those circumstances won't mean that much (like a Dream Team gold medal: a win is a yawn; only a loss gets attention).  Let him stay at home in Cleveland and continue to lose, while he focuses on becoming a billionaire.

I hate Favre with a passion for similar reasons, but: the cat DOES after all have a ring ...

so for now, LeBronze Statue of Myself is the King of Ego.
