Charlie Weis and the Florida Gators

TAMPA, FL. -- Current Kansas City Chiefs assistant Charlie Weis will likely be announced as the new offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators as early as Monday, an NFL source confirmed to CBSSports.com.

The hiring of Weis is a major coup for the Gators who just beat Penn State here in the Outback Bowl. While Weis was a failure as a head coach at Notre Dame he still remains one of the better tactical minds in college football. For a variety of reasons, his smarts never translated when he coached the Irish.

They have at Kansas City. One of the main reasons for the Chiefs' turnaround is because of the work Weis has done with quarterback Matt Cassel and that offense. Cassel has thrown 27 touchdowns and only five interceptions this season.

Weis is now bringing those pro style manueverings to Florida. Weis, in many ways, is a better offensive coach than Urban Meyer. (Yes, you read that correctly. Count the Super Bowl rings.)

But why is Weis making this move?

I'm told Weis truly enjoyed coaching on the college level and wants another shot at a college head coaching job. He views this move -- should it happen -- as the best way to achieve that goal.

Florida now has one of the best assistant coaching staffs in all of college football. The addition of Weis could be a recruiting nightmare for other programs in the state.

Your team reminds me of the 2004 Chargers....Celebrated a division title after a long playoff drought and came out flat. Once again...Cassel is every bit as pedestrian as Sanchez and then some. Jets will win 21-10 . If you end up drawing Baltimore, you will definitely lose. If you lose to Oakland....yeah, you probably play Baltimore assuming Indy wins.

If your talking quarterbacks and your a knowledgable Jets fan, then you should be worried about Mark Sanchez and this game. We haven't hbeaten Oakland yet but cmon, you think Sanchez is some kind of QB god? The only reason he's in the league is the vanilla offense the Jets run. Your right about KC's playoff woes at home, but your wrong about this year. KC should TCOB against a very anemic Jets offense and our running attack should get enough done against a Jets defense that is not what is was last year. Enjoy the New Year's and week 17, it will be the last victory for the Jets this year.  Make sure your wearing your Sanchez jersey when your watching the game next week. I would bring some gas and a lighter too for the burning after the game.

GO CHIEFS!

Completely agree Chief.  As an ND fan, I personally don't think his style fits very well in college anyway but why make this jump unless you're getting a HEAD coaching gig?  Who knows, if the KC turnaround proves legit in a few years he might even be a candidate for an NFL head coaching job.  Makes no sense at all to me.

The sarcasm in Jets "postseason success" as well......I am sure you know that Montana in 1993 is the only reason your last playoff victory isn't Super Bowl IV . Jets did kick your tails in 1986 too.

Which is exactly why you will lose. Team's don't celebrate "Division Titles" like they are some crown jewel. You have not won a home playoff game in 17 years. 1995,1997 and 2003. Homefield and choked. 1995 was the worst. Against a 9-7 Colts team. The Arrowhead Homefield Advantage doesn't seem to get the job done after Week 17. Yes...Cassel is WORSE than your 1995 chokeartist Steve Bono too. I admit the Jets will lose to NE but we will beat you first.

What great recruits  on offense did Weiss produce?  Golden Tate was a mere 3rd or 4th rnd pick who had little impact on the Seahawks this year. Claussen was a head case at the most important position on the field thus he went later in the draft also. He also was a disaster in the NFL. I can not think of one single lineman taken highly by the NFL either. yeah they put up points in college but their schedule was also easier as they were not facing NFL caliber defenses. I have no doubt Weiss can coordinate, but he is not the recruiter everyone makes him out to be and you need horses to run the offense.

Surprised this announcement couldn't of waited until after my Jets eliminate the Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs. IMO, this is an unnecessary distraction for the Chiefs as they prepare to once again go one and done.

1st off i wouldn't be so cocky after tailspinning your way into the playoffs, plus we can't all have the post season success of your Jets. Anyone in KC is already happy winning the division and going for 11 wins just 2 years after going 2-14, this new regime is good and have over shot expectations so far. Since we have the West locked up and Indy needs to win, i could see them taking over the 3 seed and getting the Jets anyway........

Why Charlie?  Why not Josh McDaniel who drafted Tebow?  He is younger, just as good a offensive mind as Weis and might stay longer.  Either one should attract great offensive recruits.  It will be interesting between now and tuesday as the new coach announces who of the assistants stay and who the new incoming coaches are.  Then let the fun begin!  Will miss Meyer and wish him the best but will always wonder how things would have worked out if his resignation last year had stuck and who would be the head coach today BUT we can only guess, the new reality begins NOW!
