Charlie Weis and the Florida Gators

TAMPA, FL. -- Current Kansas City Chiefs assistant Charlie Weis will likely be announced as the new offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators as early as Monday, an NFL source confirmed to CBSSports.com.

The hiring of Weis is a major coup for the Gators who just beat Penn State here in the Outback Bowl. While Weis was a failure as a head coach at Notre Dame he still remains one of the better tactical minds in college football. For a variety of reasons, his smarts never translated when he coached the Irish.

They have at Kansas City. One of the main reasons for the Chiefs' turnaround is because of the work Weis has done with quarterback Matt Cassel and that offense. Cassel has thrown 27 touchdowns and only five interceptions this season.

Weis is now bringing those pro style manueverings to Florida. Weis, in many ways, is a better offensive coach than Urban Meyer. (Yes, you read that correctly. Count the Super Bowl rings.)

But why is Weis making this move?

I'm told Weis truly enjoyed coaching on the college level and wants another shot at a college head coaching job. He views this move -- should it happen -- as the best way to achieve that goal.

Florida now has one of the best assistant coaching staffs in all of college football. The addition of Weis could be a recruiting nightmare for other programs in the state.

Lets face it, the Early Bird Specials in Florida rock compared to K.C.  Charlie can't wait to hit those 4pm buffets.

I have coached college players and high school players.  I enjoyed the HS level much better because the kids still enjoyed the game and didn't act like spoiled brats.  Maybe Weis enjoyed the college level more and the money was not a factor.

He does contradict himself in the article a little, but this is a move you never see in football. Move from an OC in the NFL to an OC in college doesn't make a lot of sense in most cases, he's obviously been more successful in the NFL then college. When your considered a top 5 OC in the NFL and have given up on head coaching why not keep doing what he does best and work in the NFL. I think the Chiefs will be fine and he has helped the franchise get back on track with his QB coaching and offensive shemes. I would think the money and prestige of a coordinator in the NFL are much better then that of college coordinators. He must either like Muschamp a lot or likes the college kids much more then the pros.

I love CBS Sports because after reading good opinion articles, there are guaranteed to be numerous hillarious comments about how idiotic the writers are. Love the comment below about all the writers being fired is long overdue. They could always replace Freeman with Jason Whitlock - the worst sports journalist in the business.
On another note, I think it's a great move for Weis. It always seemed that no matter how bad things went for him at ND, he genuinely loved coaching college football.

Could it be that there are only 32 NFL teams and how many NCAA teams? What a dumba** comment.

ummm.....muschamp was the fifth or sixth person contacted about the job.  uf is on the downslide, and meyer is still lurking.  real coaches want nothing to do with this recipe for failure.

Whatever the reasoning this idea is gaining traction...

The Sporting News reports that Weis will be announced on Monday

Mike Freeman, I still remember you calling the Missouri/West Virginia football game the Hicks vs. the HeeHaws. You'd do well to keep your racist views private. You are one for sure. I'd love to be able to provide CBS with a pattern of racist behavior to get you fired. Not only are you racist, but your commentary is off base (which you seem to not be accountable for), and you cover the lamest of stories. I don't know how a racist POS such as yourself got a job sportswriting. The KKK could use a counter writer to your racist BS.
