Oprah and Mike Vick

Mike Vick was supposed to appear on Oprah. Then he canceled. Then he didn't. Or something like that.

Here is a statement from Oprah's production company to CBSSports.com:

"Michael Vick was scheduled to be a guest on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' for an episode airing next Thursday, February 24," the spokesperson from Harpo Productions said. "Mr. Vick’s representatives called last night to cancel his appearance for personal reasons."

So, there is it. Vick won't be sitting on Oprah's couch.

The question becomes: why did Vick cancel?

My guess is there are three possible reasons.

Someone close to Vick told Oprah's people Vick would go on without actually checking with Vick.

Vick agreed then got cold paws, er, feet.

Oprah's people told Vick's they were going to have one of Vick's past dogs on the show.

My guess is it's door No. 3.

People seem to be completely unaware of just how widespread animal fighting is. I personally find it nauseating and callous beyond belief, but it most certainly ISN'T a precursor, much less equivalent, to serial killing. Animal fighting is a misguided male bonding activity. It's practitioners are sometimes full-blown psychopaths and, almost by definition, lacking in empathy, true. Serial killing is a sexual pathology, typically preceded by sneak punk activities like peeping, rape, and the torture-killing of small animals in childhood. Vick in no way impresses me as a sexual dysfunctional.
In the sub-culture in which he grew up, dog fighting is common. So is routinely ignoring the larger community's laws and mores. Just as it is among certain classes of southern man, Mexicans, and Victorian-era Brits of both low and high classes.

If it IS door No. 3, then I'm betting that the LEAGUE said no. ANY contact with animals likely has to be vetted through the Commish these days, in Mike's case. The visuals would just re-ignite the firestorm. Therefore (and please forgive me), it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

I am sickened it is in the NFL, he should be psychologically monitored for the rest of his life. Serial Killers have the same fascination. Most of them began with animals and were fascinated with it from childhood.  This sick sick sick man killed these dogs in so many different ways because he is a sociopath. Why would someone choose to murder these dogs in so many ways?....

..I choose to look at the vick situation in a different way, and though I don't condone his behavior, Vick seems to be the only one that has to carry the burden of all animal cruelty in this country, and its ridiculous...to compare bankrolling a dogfighting operation, ( which includes destroying animals that are no longer useful to your business), with a few of your childhood buddies who can't get legtimate employment because they are felons, is not the same as a person that grows up shooting, mutilating, torturing squirrels, cats , dogs in the neighborhood just for fun or the thrill...thats a totally different mindset, and I think you know it...If this was some case of Vick being some crazed psychopath that was going around stealing neighbors pets and killing them just for thrills,  then maybe you'd have a point, but its not, and its nowhere close to being the  story, no matter how hard you try to spin it....

He not only electrocuted, shot, stabbed, starved, beat, gouged, drowned, mauled, burned dogs. Thats all he got caught with. He also pulled out teeth of females and tied them to poles for their entire lives for his male fighting dogs to rape over and over again,....

...well we have a history where PEOPLE, HUMAN BEINGS, did the exact things to other HUMAN BEINGS right on our soil...they did cruel, inhumane things to people in so many different ways...and never had to apoligize for it, never did 1 day of jail time, never had to answer to any of it at all, it was everyday life...an accepted lifestyle for hundreds of years....Sickened??,..do you feel the same way about these individuals??....psychopaths???....needing evaluation on a weekly basis...did they ever change their mindset???....did they pass on that psychopathic mindest to their offspring, for generations???...I'm sure you'll come up with an excuse to give them all a pass...and many of those same folks have their names plastered on monuments, museums, highways, schools, etc, and are heroes in our history books...imagine that...

The thing that differntiated him last year was that he finally decided to follow the offense and he had some success.  But when D's figured him out, he and Reid couldn't figure out another move.  That and take away his weapons and he resorted back to his old ways of run first, run the offense second.

"Face it, he was going to be asked very tough questions and he would have to lie and maybe he is getting tired of being a liar"

He got his big deal, his 17 mil and endorsers are starting to come back around, so why lie anymore?  And I would imagine he and his camp and the Eagles believe that he doesn't need her because he is doing just fine "repairing" his image, i.e. playing exciting football.  I just hope he knows the repercussions of spurning the king builder Oprah.  She controls the minds of all of the women who are married to those male football fans....

Oh, spare me!

Papajayjay;

How you got a 130 score for this drivel is beyond me!  They must be giving out extra points for Christian hypocricy these days.

Not that I believe I am on a "higher plane" than anybody else, nor do I have any "whole cards" [sic] on the table, but you are assuming that Michael Vick feels guilt and will "live the rest of his life with" it.  How in tarnation do you know that?  It is as easy for me to assume he doesn't feel guilt as for you to assume he does.  Neither of us really knows, but given the lies and denial he initially put forth in response to the allegations when the story broke, I'm basing my impression on his past behavior of dishonesty.  Exactly what are you basing yours on?  his scrambling ability?  Perhaps my justification is a little more appropo than yours.

And don't give us that sanctimonious schlock about "God has forgiven him his sins."  While the rest of us may be acting like "judge and jury," you present yourself as knowing directly the actions and temperament of the Almighty.  How in blazes do YOU know whether She has forgiven Vick?  A burning bush?  Voice in the dark? Something you read in the bottom of your oatmeal bowl this morning?  A Dorito shaped like the Virgin Mary?  Did you follow an extra bright star to a desert location to the thundering musical score provided by a choir of angels?

I may very well be a stiff-necked jerk for still holding Vick morally accountable for the torture he inflicted upon the animals who would most likely have preferred he just love and care for them.  But at least I don't delude myself into speaking for the shimmering, divine One.  Your delusions do not pass for open-mindedness.  To quote the Book of Self-righteousness, Chapter III, Verse XVI,  "Proctologist heal thyself, but shoveth thine own head not into thine nether regions to do so!"

Vick , is snow balling everyone with his phoy actions. He is just not a normal person with feelings. Vick is not a good QB as he will be half as good next year. Defenses were already starting to figure his Flag Football methods out by years end..
Face it, he was going to be asked very tough questions and he would have to lie and maybe he is getting tired of being a liar

I wouldn't object to this had Freeman showed even a speck of wit or intelligence in this. He merely mailed it in because he thought he should comment on Vick. He spent, maybe, five minutes on this and then went back to whatever the Freemans of the world go back to. And we are left with this garbage. Really lame, Freeman. Really lame.
