On Cam Newton: evaluating smiles now?

Posted on: March 29, 2011 11:52 am

The nastiest, most unfair and borderline silliest thing ever written about a draft prospect appeared recently in Pro Football Weekly . When I say ever written, I mean, ever written.

PFW's Nolan Nawrocki wrote this about quarterback Cam Newton: "Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup.  Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them.  Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room . . . Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example.  Immature and has had issues with authority.  Not dependable.”

So that's how we're evaluating prospects now? On how they smile ?

On how if they know where the cameras are? What does that even mean?

I've never seen anything like this written in the media about a draft prospect. Never. And I've been covering the NFL for 20 years.

It's disgraceful. Really, it is.

Now, in the draft, we have the smile meter.

We measuring pouts next?

On Cam Newton: evaluating smiles now?

It must be race card Tuesday in Mike Freeman's world.
I'm far from a Mike Freeman supporter - I think he's a proven liar and phony and has the jounalism skills to warrant working on a high school newspaper.  But, he didn't make this about race at all.  Can't he just have a problem with a guy assessing someone's smile?  Doesn't that seem silly to you, and baseless?  I agree with Nawrocki that Newton comes off as phony.  But I'm willing to admit that I have no basis other than some random "feeling" and wouldn't post that as if it were fact.

While I don't think Newton should be drafted before the middle of the first round, all I kept hearing during the combine was how Newton was charismatic.  One person's phony smile is another guy's charisma, I guess.

That part of Nawrocki's article was as dumb as if he'd said "he has a great, genuine smile, and went on regale in all that is Newton".  It's just silly to have it in the article.

The PFW piece is just another attack piece by a guy looking for attention. He doesn't know Cam Newton. Talk to his teammates and his coaches. You won't get a picture anything like this dude painted.
I think I heard similar supportive comments about JaMarcus Russell a couple of years ago.  Nawrocki called Russell a bust before the draft that year based on character.  I assume Nawrocki spent a similar amount of time with both guys.  Certainly doesn't mean he'll be right every time, but it might lend him more credibility than a random fan.

But Mike Freeman is the subject matter expert in "The nastiest, most unfair and borderline silliest thing ever written" also most "disingenuous, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup, Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he can write, does not command respect from peers and readers, Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example.  Immature and has had issues with authority.  Not dependable."

Poor Mikey, him likely Cam Newton because he's black, and nobody agrees...except Ftballgenius...

On Cam Newton: evaluating smiles now?

Couple of reasons why the GM who drafts him prior to the 2nd. round should be immediately fired:

1- $cam is simply a more athletic version of JaMarcus Russell. He will be a bust, and every human being on the planet NOT affiliated with Auburn nor a $cam family member knows this to be true.

2- Even if #1 is horribly wrong, he identically mirrors Dez Bryant physically when you refer to what exists above the shoulders. If you give this idiot 1st. round $$$, he will learn nothing, attempt nothing, be nothing. If, howver, you give him 2nd or 3rd round $$$, he will be so "offended" that he may actually do offseason workouts AND study the playbook AND actually try really really hard to be the best QB he can be. If he's given several million GUARANTEED dollars, we'll all be seeing the answer to the following question: what would Albert Haynesworth look like as a QB?

C'mon Mike.  You're better than that.  Really?  You are going to pull out one comment that you don't like in a list of descriptors all speaking to an evaluation of character and integrity?  I don't know if the guy is right or wrong about Cam Newton, but there is nothing even close to disgraceful in his comments.  The worst you've seen in covering the NFL in 20 years??  Puuleeezzze.

I wonder if Mr Freeman would let his daughter date a guy who had so many people questioning his character, honesty and intelligence. I wouldn't expect an NFL owner to waste millions of their dollars are one either.

Well-done, Mr. Freeman. Interesting that most of those who came here to disagree support teams whose rear ends he kicked last season. Ask his Auburn teammates what kind of person he is, what kind of teammate he is. The PFW piece is just another attack piece by a guy looking for attention. He doesn't know Cam Newton. Talk to his teammates and his coaches. You won't get a picture anything like this dude painted.
