On Cam Newton: evaluating smiles now?

Posted on: March 29, 2011 11:52 am

The nastiest, most unfair and borderline silliest thing ever written about a draft prospect appeared recently in Pro Football Weekly . When I say ever written, I mean, ever written.

PFW's Nolan Nawrocki wrote this about quarterback Cam Newton: "Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup.  Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them.  Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room . . . Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example.  Immature and has had issues with authority.  Not dependable.”

So that's how we're evaluating prospects now? On how they smile ?

On how if they know where the cameras are? What does that even mean?

I've never seen anything like this written in the media about a draft prospect. Never. And I've been covering the NFL for 20 years.

It's disgraceful. Really, it is.

Now, in the draft, we have the smile meter.

We measuring pouts next?

On Cam Newton: evaluating smiles now?

I agree with those that believe that this is relevant to his character.  Whether you believe that he is a phony or not, many teams in need of a quarterback really need to know everything about who they draft.  It's not just a player, it is a huge financial risk/investment.  We have so many examples of flops and money wasted because NFL teams did not see past the pre programmed interview responses, or even the phony smiles (Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, etc....).  I think Nawrocki is just stating his beliefs based on his observation, just as the NFL teams that are thinking about drafting him must do as well.

Sheesh, Freeman.  Always focusing on the negatives, eh?  Shall we focus on the positive and evaluate your smile "I'm so happy my sphincters are no longer constipated" look?

Yes, and he could tell all that by a smile....Please have this man sit down with me when I m interviewing people for a jub....he will be tell me all by a smile. Candid, please how is it possibl;e to tell all this from a smile? Please how many people are not aware of the camera at all time....and should he not be? This wasn't candid, this was bull? I don't know if Newton will be a good QB, or has character issues or not...but please  don't tell em this man came up with all of this from a smile.

Actually..IMO..this seems spot on..and it isn't how he smiles..it's what's behind the smiles.

I have thought the exact same thing about Newton...a phony..money first..me first..a player I would steer clear of..If I were a GM ..

Seriously?  You have a problem with this? Your quarterback is your TEAM LEADER in a FAR larger way than in any other sport.  This writer is bringing up KEY CHARACTER QUALITIES regarding this potential TEAM LEADER.  No problem with this at all.   Not disgraceful at all.  It would be refreshing if more writers were this candid.

Well what you see is what you get.  Someone looked beyond the smile and saw what he truly is!  Why does that bother you? He's a QB he has to have some qualities of self-centeredness, but they are reporting he has too much.  The winning the locker room and leadership skills will be earned and we will know if he can or can't by the middle of pre-season (if there is one) because these guys tweet and everything else, so somebody will let the cat out of the bag about his leadership skills and locker room presense.  If he can settle and focus and learn he has the potential to be a very good NFL QB, but if he takes the road the others he will be another woulda, coulda, shoulda been!

What Scam and his father pulled off was an even bigger disgrace this year than a pro writiing about the many flaws of this fraud.  And if the NCAA wants to be proactive in their search they'll take away the title from Auburn like they did to USC.  Best team in college last yr was TCU anyways for those that watched the bowl games....but back to the issue.  Newton is a fake and just like the CBS posterchild from FL last yr - will prove to be an NFL bust.  Sorry boys - Spread offense doesn't work in the NFL if you can't throw a tight spiral.

Hey Freeman, whether you like it or not, that's the most spot-on description of Cam Newton's personality that I've seen yet. The kid seriously thinks he's a descendant of Zeus and has no idea how to come across as not scripted. Cam will rival Lebron James' new ego the day he steps on the field, he's not gonna learn how to play QB in the NFL because he's fully convinced he already knows how.
