Panthers continue march towards Newton

It continues to look increasingly like the Carolina Panthers are going to select Cam Newton with the first overall pick in April's draft. But there is a caveat.

Owner Jerry Richardson still isn't completely sold on Newton, a source with knowledge of the Panthers' draft plans told CBSSports.com. Still, Richardson will likely defer to his personnel staff, and many of them have met with Newton, and like him.

The lockout is damaging the entire league but when it comes to rookies it's Newton who could be hurt more than others. Some teams are concerned if the labor impasse contiinues into the summer or longer quarterbacks like Newton who will need extensive coaching might suffer more than other rookies.

Another player the Panthers continue to be enamored with is former Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green. I find this impossible to believe but people I trust insist the Panthers could trade down and take Green.

Panthers continue march towards Newton

If the Panther's do not take Cam Newton, it will be the single worse decision made by the Panther Organization. Every single game of his career, they will watch highlights of him doing things that are jaw dropping. Cam Newton is a once in a lifetime player, that will be the fan favorite Carolina has NEVER had.
I am an Auburn fan, and the first game I ever witnessed was the 1982 Iron Bowl. A guy name Vincent Bo Jackson was a true freshman, and rushed for 256 yards & 3 Td's against a team coached by Bear Bryant. I never thought I would ever see a player in my lifetime that was comparable. By the fourth game of the season, I thought he was better than Bo. As a QB, he broke Bo and Cadillac's Rushing TD record which was 18 in the Georgia game. In every single game of the season, there was no doubt who the best player on the field was. BO Jackson saw it, and did not miss a single game this year despite living in Chicago.
Next year the best selling Jersey in the NFL will be a #2. If it says Arizona on the front, nobody will even know what # Clausen is or was by the end of the season.

What would be the best plan, would be to stick with Clauson another year. And if things don`t get better, take Andrew Luck in the next draft. One year as a college starter, just doesn`t seem like a player that should be considered a 1st round pick. newton played on a team that was loaded with talent. Got to wonder how fast he`ll crumble, if the weight of the team is put on his shoulders, kind of like that other loser QB they had, that quit on them... Kerry Collins.

There is only one Auburn player Carolina should draft and that's Nick Fairley. We need a DT a whole lot more then a QB. And I'd rather have the next Warren Sapp over a Randal Cunningham ( that's 'if' he turns out right I think he is more likely the next Akeli Smith).

Gor it!  Reputation - 1; level - amateur.  You gotta be kidding, with a trade like that, you should be at least at zero on reputation and trainee for your level.!

You didn't watch Auburn play if you didn't see Newton throw a pass longer than 15 yards. Newton actually threw the deep ball very well this season. He had a couple of 50 yard passing TDs in the SEC title game alone. I also remember a couple of deep TD passes vs Bama as well. I remember Sam Bradford being pretty good last year. Not only did he not take snaps under center in college he also didn't even play the entire 09 season. No one really knows who will & won't be a good or great NFL player. All I know is that newton has the athleticism to make plays in the NFL. His throwing mechanics are very sound & if he is coached up he will probably be the kind of player that can make you regret passing on him.

AS A PANTHER PSSL OWNER,  THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR I BELIEVE THE PANTHERS SHOULD TRADE DOWN... AND GET A QB LIKE KOLB VIA TRADE,OR HIT THE FREE AGENT MARKET FOR A QB, OR USE THE #1 PICK TO GET A FRANCHISE WR (GREEN,OR JONES) OR A TOP NOTCH DB ( P. PETERSON LSU) THAT WILL  SET THE STAGE TO HAVE SOME PLAYERS TO BUILD AROUND...
