The Morning Shoutout

Cam Newton: It's very possible the Carolina Panthers are pulling one of the great magical smokescreens of all time. It's possible they've managed to do something few teams picking first in the draft have ever done which is keep their true intentions a secret. But all signs still point to the Panthers taking Newton--though I'm not as confident as I was only a week or so ago.

One geneneral manager estimated the chances of the Panthers taking Newton at 75 to 80 percent. That same general manager a month ago estimated the chances at 90 percent so I'm not the only one wondering if the Panthers are holdin' em and foldin' em. Or however that damn song goes.

BE HONEST: Other than the drama of where Newton is picked this draft is kind of boring.

TRADES: There's lots of talk about various teams trading up and down but in the end very few teams will. I'm told by several scouts that the collective bargaining situation has made so many teams extremely nervous basically the entire league is afraid to do almost anything including trading. I expect few.

UGLY: Lastly, is there a possibility the owners and players sit down and talk before the lockout case is appealed to the 8th Circuit? Um, well, no . Both sides are in unison in at least one way. They want to exhaust all legal options before talking again. Plus, this fight has gotten extremely bitter. The bitterness has reached all-time levels, approaching -- quickly -- the bitterness levels of the strike years in the 1980s.

See you Thursday.

"Of all time!!"  Kind of serious drama, no?     And of all time? That takes on everything that has ever ever happened.

I agree with the previous caller. This will likely NOT be a boring draft. It won't be boring live, and it won't be boring to revisit it in a few years. This draft has more bust potential than most, but it also has the potential to be the welcoming party for several super stars. I love it.
As for the Panthers; ok sure, Clausen wasn't very productive. Not good. But there is a reason they grabbed him last year. He has potential. He was thrown into the starting role with no mentor and the rest of their team was terrible. You can't put all the blame on him. Because of this, I think they give the kid another chance. They won't be drafting Newton. They're fools if they do. Give that D-Line a little beef. GO PACKERS!!!

What would really add to the excitement of the draft, is if Nelson rules against the 'stay' today, starting the league year officially.  That would allow for the trade of players starting the day of the draft... which would likely cause all kinds of madness over draft weekend with player movement (even if the teams are still hesitant to sign free agents).  Truth be told though, I think this is very far from being a 'kind of boring' draft.  The fact that there will probably be 6-8 QB's taken in the first couple rounds is enough of an anomoly to make it pretty fascinating.  Especially if there turns out to be a press of teams trying to move into the late 1st/early 2nd to get those guys.
