Rookie wage scale agreement

Two officials briefed on the state of the NFL's negotiations confirmed to me the owners and players have agreed on the basic parameters of a rookie wage scale proposal.

This is a huge step. As the sources explained the rookie wage scale was one of the few obstacles remaining. There are still some minor details to work out but it's all but a done deal, I'm told.

There was the usual expression of caution but the feeling was that this cleared the way for a deal to come soon, maybe as early as Monday or Tuesday. It's unclear exactly what system the two sides have agreed to.

The sources familiar with the discussions added there are still some issues regarding the overall collective bargaining agreement to resolve including how to fund benefits for retired players.

"We're closing in on a deal," one source familiar with the talks said.

Now, we've heard this before--close, close, close--but this is a huge moment.

The talks, I'm told, are scheduled to go late into Thursday night and continue through the weekend if needed.

Agreed.  This article was basically useless, except that the final major stumbling block seems to be solved.  I guess I have to listen to ESPN.

OK so where's the news to back up the headlines?  We knew from the beginning that the rookie scale was a part of this hole mess, so what is it?  Where did the negotiations go with it?  How much will they get and for how many years?  WHERE'S THE NEWS?  Why print this, just to take up space?  If I wrote this last week would I have received your check today?

I am mystified by the hold that the NFL has over its fans.  After the fiasco of the 1987 strike and replacement player games I tuned out on the NFL and tuned in to NCAA football.  I find that the NCAA is a better product on the field and I never have to worry about work stoppages.  Now, if only something could be done about the BCS life would be great.

Basic parameters? That's like saying they're somewhere within the same country. So sick of hearing close, but with caution. Call me when it's over.

@NFLEASTFAN  -->  You have the perfect job from the sounds of it considering you have ZERO initiative to be proactive during tough times.  Eagles fan to boot.  Hilarious
