The threat that changed everything

Earlier I wrote on how the players made a threat that proved somewhat jarring to ownership and forced them to make concessions. Well, Sports Illustrated just reported what that threat was and it was a game changer.

The details I've heard are slightly different but the core facts are the same. The NFLPA had secured lockout insurance (there is such a thing?) for each player in the amount of $200,000 (one player told me the amount was $300,000) in the event the season was missed.

The union told the owners this late Wednesday night and, I'm told, it shook the owners. The next day, on Thursday, is when progress was made so quickly.

This is a huge deal and explains why the owners made concessions. While $200,000 or even $300,000 isn't a lot of cash to Peyton Manning, it is for most of the rank and file.

By playing this card, the players, at the last minute, outmaneuvered the owners. I'm told it completely stunned ownership.

Wow. Just wow,

This is the second biggest piece of news to only the fact a deal is all but done.

This was the players saying "checkmate."

The threat that changed everything

As an owner I would have locked your buttds out until the final day of the season then lift the lockout so no insurance was paid.
Whole season wasn't locked out.  BAM!

The threat that changed everything

Lol, really? Mr.Freeman, are you trying to tell us that with all those high price lawyers that the owners have they somehow miss this loophole? If this was the case, why they hell didn't the players reps didn't do this a lot sooner but instead dragging this to the wee hours? I get it, both sides didn't see this right? The question is this, is the lockout over? NO. Same crap different day.

The threat that changed everything

Who cares how it finally got done??

Revealing this makes D-Smith look like a total buffoon for not getting the deal done way before this!

Do you truly feel that this was sole factor in getting this deal done? Freeman, no one tells you the truth anyway, so you are not a source. As a group of men running an organization like the NFL, you would hope that they have looked at all alternatives and having insurance for a lockout doesn't seem that stupendous to be a major shock to anyone. But most of these reports coming from Freeman and this site haven't been the most newsworthy anyway. I do hope a deal gets done, but I would be surprised if this had anything to do with it.

The threat that changed everything

You said it baby, WOW!  Thats a heck of an ace card to thrown down on the table.  No doubt it was a powerful bargaining chip, but could all of this been avoided or solved weeks, possibly months ago if they had disclosed this to the owners earlier?  Just a thought.  Nonetheless, it looks we we are going to have a season.  Glory Hallelujah!!
