Manning, Brees also want free agency

Posted on: July 19, 2011 11:37 am

There are more problems in the final days of the CBA negotiations between the owners and players and those issues settle around Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.

Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from players Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson.

The new CBA will get done but this is still a troubling sign that the the NFLPA is making last ditch efforts to get more from the owners. It can, indeed, slow things down.

Again, a deal will get done this week but this is not great news.

Brees is scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011 and Manning was tagged for 2011 that would pay him $23 million.

A CBA cannot be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

Never, as soon as they start playing again, all will be forgotten, as was with Mike Vick who is now back with Nike.  As was with Kobe Bryant after the rape case.  Nobody cares when your playing and winning

Manning, Brees also want free agency

Is this what they mean by pulling back the goalposts just before the kick?  Sure, it's probably just a ploy on someone's part, to try to extract some last-minute concessions.  After all, it wasn't Manning "or" Brees supposedly making this demand, it's Manning "and" Brees.  Think they just happened to make the same demand at the same time by coincidence?  Doubt it.

But if they are really, truly serious, it would just be DeMaurice Smith's chickens coming home to roost.  Maybe we're finally finding out what can happen when a union unwisely decertifies, goes to court rather than to the NLRB, and (at least ostensibly) lets individual court plaintiffs run the show whose interests may not be identical with those of the rest of the players.  Obviously no one else with the players wants a settlement to be held up very long just so these two guys can become free agents, right?  But maybe that really is how a union blows it when they decertify and prevent themselves from keeping things under control?........Nah, they couldn't have been that stupid, could they?  So it's probably just a ploy after all!

owners should just say to hell wiith it.  don't agree to their demands and keep the lockout going.  F*** brees and manning.  They will go down in history as the ones that ruined the 2011 season and forever tarnish their reputations with their selfishness.  $23 million?  $10 million to play 16 games? (excluding playoffs) oh and to only have one a day training camps now?  Is it really worth it to be the darling sof the NFL and then to make everyone hate you with this BS???  they are getting greedy and it's not looking like it'll get all that much better.

Now that the salary cap has been lowered, the teams that like to spend won't be able too. And the FA will either have to settle for less or go to small market teams that don't like to pay big buck or sign long term deals.

Manning is 35 and has had two neck surgeries.  He is taking the 25 million.  That is a led pipe stone cold lock.

I am surprised we have this type of reaction with this article. It is Freeman saying this, and we all know how his stories turn out. I would wait until a credible source gives us the information. Until then, we should consider the source.
