Manning, Brees also want free agency

Posted on: July 19, 2011 11:37 am

There are more problems in the final days of the CBA negotiations between the owners and players and those issues settle around Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.

Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from players Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson.

The new CBA will get done but this is still a troubling sign that the the NFLPA is making last ditch efforts to get more from the owners. It can, indeed, slow things down.

Again, a deal will get done this week but this is not great news.

Brees is scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011 and Manning was tagged for 2011 that would pay him $23 million.

A CBA cannot be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

So, Manning and Brees are no different than any other player in the league or human being on the planet. They're looking out for number one, which is fine. We all do it. But at least now we know not to hold them to some different standard than we hold any other player in the league to. We love tossing flowers at the feet of QBs that win Super Bowls, but maybe it's time to pump the brakes on all that for now. They have their agendas and that's what matters most to them. That's fine. But we'll remember that down the road when some pinhead ESPN voicebox is raving about Drew "saving" New Orleans or the "classy" Peyton Manning.

Yea, don't understand this at all. Manning isn't going to get any more money, not with his neck. Brees might. It makes no sense for Drew to leave New Orleans, though, unless this is just because they know they'll get what they want... watch Brady will decide he wants free agency next.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

I hope the owners tell Brees and Manning to "go pound sand!"  If these two want to be the ones responsible for stopping the rest of the players in the entire league from playing and making money, as well as possibly scuttling the one billion dollar contribution to the retired players fund so be it.  If Brees and Manning do this, they'll have a very difficult time finding a place to hide.

My guess is that it is a ploy. It would be hard to imagine someone paying Manning more than the 23 million he is slated to receive.  Both players are smart; so it must be a last minute bargaining chip.  Really disconcerting at this point as it's time to stop screwing around and get the season back on track.

I'm a bit disappointed with Peyton Manning. He's gonna make $23 million and he can't man up and stay for one year? Typical arraogance of these multi-millionaires. Yes, he is one of the best, and yes, a new CBA may change things but he needs to live with for another year. Don't start acting like Carson Palmer unless you are gonna retire. Don't care what Brees thinks either. What ever happened to loyalty and living up to your contract?

Greed pure greed. A small group of players is holding up the deal.  If you attempt to do this, your names will be mud.
