Manning, Brees also want free agency

Posted on: July 19, 2011 11:37 am

There are more problems in the final days of the CBA negotiations between the owners and players and those issues settle around Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.

Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from players Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson.

The new CBA will get done but this is still a troubling sign that the the NFLPA is making last ditch efforts to get more from the owners. It can, indeed, slow things down.

Again, a deal will get done this week but this is not great news.

Brees is scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011 and Manning was tagged for 2011 that would pay him $23 million.

A CBA cannot be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

Pay Time

$10 mil for brees, $23 mil for manning?  That's chump change for these superstars.  Their owners need to get them a lot more money before they will agree to any deal.

Freeman's credibility as a journalist called into question in the above article.  Essentially it says he is not really a journalist, similar to the whole News of the World thing, time to call out these hack journalists!!

Kluwe is a blow hole, more than likely in desperate need of a check. He should keep his mouth shut and let the big boys handle company matters. His name is not on the lawsuit for a reason.
Kluwe is also a member of the same union that is trying to "break the NFL". I doubt that with millions already banked, Kluwe is living like a hobo and the argument that a mere punter's input isn't as worth as much as a studly QB's is quite superficial, especially since Kluwe's opinion respresents the majority of both fans and players at a time when a deal that appears so close is potentially being held up by a handful of "big boys".

You don't go into a negotiation asking for $10 and expect to get $10.  Haven't any of you bought a car?  Its the same thing.  You ask for more options and you end up meeting somewhere in between.

Bargaining? They don't have any leverage, hopefully the owners see that and tell them to take a hike.  No bargaining here at all... I'd love to see the owners tell the union that Manning, Brees, Jackson and Mankins get nothing.  No financial compensation and no free agency at all this year.  Either they sign or there is no more talking and no NFL football for 2011.   Let's see how they explain to over 1900 other players that it was worth it......

I hope Peyton and the boys stand firm and break the NFL.

Stay cool gentlemen

What? You think it's even possible that Peyton and the boys will "break" the NFL?  Listen man.  If the owners want to fight the players don't stand a chance.  Compared to the owners these plaintiffs are scumbags and living the life of a welfare recipient. If I was the Goodell I'd instruct the owners to walk away and tell the players they prefer to settle every dispute they have in court.  Make sure to let the players and the world know that Brees, Manning and the other 2 shmucks are the reason there isn't going to be any football this season.

I'd be willing to bet EVERYTHING within 48 hours of that announcement these players would drop these lawsuits because they would be fielding hundreds of phone calls from pissed off players........

Didn't Brees came out last week and say it was time to end this lockout and sign a deal?  Well, time to put your money where you mouth is and sign the form to dismiss this lawsuit and finalize a deal, Drew.  Not wasting our time and finish this.

Why can't they just consider the CBA as their victory and drop the suit?

The suit could be bigger than the new CBA and more beneficial to player down the road. In simplest terms the suit is questioning the NFL’s reserve clause.

For example (on a popular player), hypothetically speaking, Peyton Manning signs a five year deal with the Colts and at the end of the five years want to leave. Under the current system the Colts are to be compensated or can tag Peyton. The Colts could also tag him the following year as well. Now yes, the player will be highly compensated, but if his real desire is to leave that franchise.

Kluwe had it right.

Kluwe is a blow hole, more than likely in desperate need of a check. He should keep his mouth shut and let the big boys handle company matters. His name is not on the lawsuit for a reason.

Ironic that the NFLPA took the most respected players in the league, and exposed them for the greedy jerks they truly are through this lawsuit.

Hard to challenge the NFL’s reserve clause with players like Kluwe as the plantiff. Need the big names to challenge the system. I commend all the players that were willing to put their names on the suit.

I hope Peyton and the boys stand firm and break the NFL.

Stay cool gentlemen.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

These guys would see their popularity PLUMMET if they were responsible for the CBA falling through.  Why can't they just consider the CBA as their victory and drop the suit?  Why do they have to try to get something in return for their dropping the case.  Kluwe had it right.  These guys are just a bunch of d-bags.  Ironic that the NFLPA took the most respected players in the league, and exposed them for the greedy jerks they truely are through this lawsuit.

$23, $10 million, damn those slave owners for forcing these employees to sign a contract so cheap. How on earth will they be able to feed their families, and put a roof over their heads...
