Manning, Brees also want free agency

Posted on: July 19, 2011 11:37 am
There are more problems in the final days of the CBA negotiations between the owners and players and those issues settle around Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.

Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from players Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson.

The new CBA will get done but this is still a troubling sign that the the NFLPA is making last ditch efforts to get more from the owners. It can, indeed, slow things down.

Again, a deal will get done this week but this is not great news.

Brees is scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011 and Manning was tagged for 2011 that would pay him $23 million.

A CBA cannot be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

I doubt Manning and Brees are trying to cut thier own deals because they can't any concessions given to them would have to be part of the whole cba. they are trying to modify they way the franchise tag is used by teams. they are both going to make truckloads of cash and they know it, they want the frachise tag eliminated or modified to be used only once on the same player if the owners agree then they drop the suit and the players as a whole benefit from this not just Drew and Peyton.

What they REALLY WANT is to be declared Free Agents WITHOUT the option of being Tagged. It is what Reggie White (and others) got the last time they sued and were part of the "side" settlement.

The $23 Millions IS all guaranteed because it's for only 1-year. It's multi-year deals that are NOT guaranteed.

It's why when they sign the long-term contracts they get the signing bonus which IS the guaranteed part.

First of all Brady shouldn't want UFA since he just SIGNED a new long term contract.

Manning has been franchised.  He's getting payed $23 million for this year.  He's going to get his long term contract and become the highest paid player anyway according to HIS owner.  I don't think Manning's all too concerned about being an UFA.

Brees has one year left on his contract that pays him $10 million for this year.

This is just a ploy to get something else.  Probably the Jackson/Mankins settlement.

Its called BARGAINING!

You don't go into a negotiation asking for $10 and expect to get $10.  Haven't any of you bought a car?  Its the same thing.  You ask for more options and you end up meeting somewhere in between.

Just because the contract say 23m doesn't mean you get 23m.  It all depends on what is guarenteed money.  You can have a 23m contract and only have 14 guarenteed.  That means an owner can release you at anytime and only owe you 14m not 23m.  I all money is guarenteed then none of this is needed.Cool

He never wanted to quit because 23 million just wasn't enough. He just kept coming back like an unrelenting beast. Favre will take the colts to the SB

I'd like to see Manning become a FA and never get signed again...... by any team...... and then never make it to the hall of fame

I agree 100% with you.  If someone signs a contract, he/she should uphold their side of the agreement.  I was responding to the majority of people complaining about how much these guys are getting paid, they aren't complaining about how Manning and Brees signed a contract and are now trying to back out of it.  I do have a problem with them backing out of an agreement, I have no problem with how much they get paid, or that they would like more if someone was willing to give it to them.  Who are they to say what is enough and that they make too much money?  That was my only point, I hope I clarified myself.

I think you did clarify yourself here.
I know everyone has a right to get what they can financially. PERSONALLY, I think individuals should recognize there is, somehwere , a tipping point where they certainly exceed what a person needs to live on - and by that I mean live VERY comfortably, taking car of self, family, friends, etc).  But I know thats just MY view, and I cant knock a prson for accumulating vast wealth. I would hope that they would recognize the good they could do by either taking less, or spreading it in a helpful manner (an obvious non-sports example being Bill Gates... who has crazy money, but funds many educational some point he just cant spend it all on himself, so he spends it on others)
I know thats startign to get off the point ( as players dont make Bill Gates type money) but Im sure you understand the example.

We have all heard/ read interviews where players making millions make comments referring to "putting food on the table" or something similar. I think its just hard for the average joe to comprehwend a guy hauling in that much cash making that TYPE of statement. And they get upset about it.  Which in turn leads to alot of comments left on messge boards like these where the things being posted are based as much on frustration/ negative reaction  as thought.

If you read all that, thanks. guess I was in the mood to ramble lol
