Manning, Brees also want free agency

Posted on: July 19, 2011 11:37 am
There are more problems in the final days of the CBA negotiations between the owners and players and those issues settle around Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.

Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from players Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson.

The new CBA will get done but this is still a troubling sign that the the NFLPA is making last ditch efforts to get more from the owners. It can, indeed, slow things down.

Again, a deal will get done this week but this is not great news.

Brees is scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011 and Manning was tagged for 2011 that would pay him $23 million.

A CBA cannot be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

It's all about MONEY for the league and owners!!! These player just want to let the owners know that they play for them the are not owned by them. If anyone is greedy it's the owners and the league. The owners have to raise fees on the fans to support the mandates set by the league. Then the owners place the blame on the league. Sure the league set's the cap and teams have to meet them guidelines. The real problem is that the league thinks they are intitled to more money and the fan base just can't take it anymore. The players are in it to make a living and just like you and I they play for the better pay scale. To bad the owners and league continue to bleed the fans and players union dry. I will give you that... the players are over paid. Can't we blame that on the players agents and the owners? No matter what happens I and all true fans want to see some football! The NFL will have many years to try to recover from this and I'm not sure it will ever happen. So I say to the league, owners and yes some players... enough already quit bleeding the fans and get on the field!!!

I agree 100% with you.  If someone signs a contract, he/she should uphold their side of the agreement.  I was responding to the majority of people complaining about how much these guys are getting paid, they aren't complaining about how Manning and Brees signed a contract and are now trying to back out of it.  I do have a problem with them backing out of an agreement, I have no problem with how much they get paid, or that they would like more if someone was willing to give it to them.  Who are they to say what is enough and that they make too much money?  That was my only point, I hope I clarified myself.

So many people who don't even understand what this article means. All they hear is "players want more money!", the refrain they've been taught since this whole thing started. It's sad when the pro-owners crowd may actually have a point to make and can't even make it right.

All along I said I have no respect for the players in this fight, because all along it has been a money grab based on greed by the players. This is just the obvious proof. But the real proof is the overwhelming evidence that the owners have been and remain more than willing to make these petty small minded men very rich men. No respect for any of the crybabies in the Brady suit. If I had my way the owners would one up them and grant their full release with the assurance they will never play another down in the NFL.

I kind of agree with you and kind of don't.  The average NFL fan can go to our boss and demand free agency (threaten to quit).  The difference is, we are more easily replaceable, thus less valuable.  Everyone gets paid based on how difficult it is to replace them, sorry to say to all of you liberal douche's but it's true.
Liberal douches? Really? So Im guessing you would consider yourself a conservative, and therefor, not a douche? Do you support the idea of a man signing a contract - a busniess agreement - and then trying to bail out on it becuae he feels like it? There is no such thing as "out-performing" your contract if that is the argument. A player is expected to perform at his best, THAT is the agreement. If you had an ALL PRO year, or if you got benched for being terrible, the contract remains. How often do you hear of a player giving money back for "under-performing" his contract? NEVER. Its total BS to try to have it both ways....."hey i know i was freakin terrible but gimme my money honor the contract".....AND "oh, hey, I was actually pretty good, so screw your contract gimme a better one..."

If you PLAY OUT your contract, then fine, be a free agnt and cash in. Sickof the players who talk out of their ass about what "right" or "fair" when they are not men of their word, when it doesnt suit them to be.

So for the original poster making the liberal d-bag reference, please, be a better man, dont stoop to name calling like a child, and respect the fact that some people are simply pointing out that they RESPECT people who honor their commitments.... thats far different than someone complaing about another man getting rich, or simple jealousy.

They watch their so called "idols" acting like spoiled brats, pouting, sitting down and refusing to do anything until they get their way! What a bunch of clowns! And we pay the price at the stadiums for tickets, parking, highway robbery refreshments, souvenoirs, etc.! Get back to work, you primma donnas!!

Although some of the players are multi millionaires, keep in mind how much money the owners make. Theres a big difference between a player making 10 and 20 million dollars a year and owners who make 320 million dollars a year! I try and keep myself out of the bussiness portion of the sport and concentrate on the entertainment side.  The players are still the little guy in all of this . Only in America can the little guys make 10-20 million dollars a year!

The owners will counter with free chauffeur service and playoff/Super Bowl ticket for the NFLPA, uh, Trade Association, and call it a deal. Nice.
