Manning, Brees also want free agency

Posted on: July 19, 2011 11:37 am

There are more problems in the final days of the CBA negotiations between the owners and players and those issues settle around Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.

Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from players Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson.

The new CBA will get done but this is still a troubling sign that the the NFLPA is making last ditch efforts to get more from the owners. It can, indeed, slow things down.

Again, a deal will get done this week but this is not great news.

Brees is scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011 and Manning was tagged for 2011 that would pay him $23 million.

A CBA cannot be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

how much did Jerry Jones pay for that new stadium? people complaing about what peyton makes a year?  wasnt the dallas cowboys owner the one being sued over the superbowl seats?  who was the greedy one there? not manning or brees.. see how fast people forget? also what about the metrodome? 25million for a new roof? who paid that? wasnt it the owners that wanted the TAX PAYERS to pay for it? oh okay.. get off the couch and put the beer down read some articles online before u start bashing these players.. over 50% of them are broke after 10 years of retirment because they have to pay out of pocket for there medical bills.. that surgery peyton just had was a 300k surgery.. if he wasnt in the league he would have to pay for that.. now i know what ur going to say he made 23 million.. most NFL players pay 3200 a month for benifits... he might never be able to some of the things we comon folk take for granite.. be peyton manning and walk into a crowded area see how long it takes u to go from point a to point b.. The adds the kid camps the community service.. half the people have dirty ass front lawns and wont cut the grass but come on here to bash peyton manning who probably cleaned ur kids school before or an athlete of his caliber.. there not tackling 13 year old kids that catch balls and run away unlock a lebron james that has to swat a kids shot to win a game of horse or dwayne wade.. go bash them.. no one crying about tiger woods being the first billion athlete.. let them get paid they live hard lives.. u dont think so? tell everyone in your family u hit the lottery for 100 million.. now u know what they go through.

MANNING HAS NEVER TAKEN A PAY CUT.  It is bogus to suggest that Manning is doing anything but making a massive fortune from his career.  Can he make another million or two?  Does he want to pay more taxes?  Let's not make any player or owner out to be some saint, okay Brees is a New Orleans saint, because when you go to the game next year you are going to pay for all this.  The next year you will pay more for parking, for dogs and beer, for your favorite team jersey.

The CBA is on the backs of the consumers.  We are the suckers who are watching it with our eyes and getting it from behind.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

Just my opinion but -- Manning's contract is up and he was tagged as a "franchise player", we all know he is going to resign with Indy so let him be a "free agent" if he doesn't want the 23million and it gets the new CBA done; Bree's however has a contract, he is not tagged as a franchise player, so if I am the owners, especially the Saints' owner, I am holding firm here and telling Brees no way on his demand to be a free agent now or next year -- the same rules that apply to all players next year are going to apply to him as well.  As for Makins and Jackson -- the answer is "no", it was their decision not to play last year under the existing CBA rules so, in my opinion, they are not entitled to any compensation...certainly not $10million each as they've demanded.

Looks like Manning, Brees, Mankins and Jackson (or their agents) are trying to ruin the negotiated new CBA for all players, retired players and owners by being a little selfish in their individual demands.  If we miss any football, we know who to blame.

Manning, Brees also want free agency

Why is everyone on this post ripping just the marquee-named players?  Manning - HOF, Brees - potential HOF. Both on top of their game, they deserve to make what the market will bare. There is less than 5 guys on the planet that can do what they can. It sucks for us they make a million $ or more a game, but there skill level and track record warrants an elite salary. The NFL is a multi billion dollar business - it can afford it. Let's direct atleast a little bit of the blame towards the owners and the legal representation of both sides. This whole thing is a mess and will never be fully right.

I don't think either player really wants to leave his team, but the "union" is probably pressuring them to make noise to open up free agency for more of the players. The superstars will always get a larger slice of the pie because the owners know they bring in additional revenue besides just the buts in the seats. This whole lockout has just underscored what a bunch of greedy *&*^&&*^ the players and owners are. I wish there would be a national call to boycott the first regular game of the season by the fans. Don't forgive the headache this mess has caused the fans, we are after all the ones paying all of them and the only way to show them our displeasure is to hot them in the pocketbook. BOYCOTT pass it on.

No, if they are declared free agents now it helps speed up the process of getting the new CBA done.
Manning doesn't want to leave Indy & if anything I'm sure he & his agent have an idea of what kind of agreement they want for his final contract with the Colts so he stays with them for his whole career.
As for Brees, New Orleans is easy to get to from his Houston home base and he loves playing for Sean Payton & the Saints so no it isn't about money it's just a way to settle the lawsuit fast so that in essence moves the CBA closer to getting done so they can get back to football.
Jeez, THINK before you type and assume someone is being greedy, use some logic instead of just knee jerk reactions.

Agreed. $23 million for one year of football isn't enough?

It's gotten as bad as major league baseball. When is this crap going to stop?

By the way, if the owners' negotiators were to agree to this, I wouldn't want to be the one who has to call up the Colts' and Saints' owners to tell them they have to give up their quarterbacks.  I realize the owners' approval of any deal doesn't have to be unanimous, but giving in to this demand would make sure it wouldn't be unanimous.
