Philly: the greatest paper champions ever

Posted on: August 10, 2011 7:05 pm

And that isn't meant in a negative way. Or a demeaning one. But what Philadelphia is doing is simply the greatest offseason football experiment we've seen in a long time. It's likely the sport has never seen anything like this.

Perhaps the offseason era when the Washington Redskins signed players like Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith but the Redskins signed older players far beyond their prime. When the Green Bay Packers signed Reggie White that was one of the more historic free agents signings as well.

Unlike the Redskins, the Eagles are signing younger stars like Nnamdi Asomugha and adding solid veterans. Their signing of Pro Bowler Steve Smith is a risk but a minimal one since it's a one-year contract.

Again, none of this means the Eagles will win a Super Bowl, but it does mean this might be the greatest off-season a team has ever had.

Philly: the greatest paper champions ever

The comment that players don't know about small market teams is pretty silly.... and I was not saying the players vote of the top 100 is an asbolute measuring stick, I was just saying that the players are more knowledgeable than most fans, and they had 18 receivers on that list, and Nicks wasn't on it.

Jokerst-

That wasn't my top ten, and it wasn't in a specified order.  I just listed 10 receivers I though were better than Nicks.  There are a lot of people who don't think Nicks is a top ten.  I think he very well could be, and if I had to make a prediction, he WILL be top ten after this year.  But he's not there yet.  Calm down dude.

That wasn't my top ten, and it wasn't in a specified order.  It should have been obvious that it wasn't in a specified order.  Half the list isn't better than Mike Wallace?  What?  I'm basing my list off of what these players have done the past 2 years (this doesn't apply to players who have only played one year).  I don't think Nicks is a top ten receiver.

On the miami heat analogy, I hate it and it doesn't even make sense. If i was an eagle fan that would drive me nuts. you can't even compare the two sports. The eagles would have had to sign 60% of their starting players on both sides of the ball from free angency that would have had to be in the top 5 players at their position for it to make sense. So for all fans out there not eagle fans using this analogy please stop. Just becasue someone on tv or the radio says this doesn't mean its a smart thing to say....

I'm not even going to respond back to your piece on the popularity vote by the NFL players... However, let me provide you insight going forward if you ever want to get into an itellegent conversation with anyone else on the best Wrs in the NFL. Your first three should look something like this in no particular order. Andre, Calvin, RODDY WHITE! The fact your top ten has BM, SH, SR, and DS on it and not Roddy White allows me to not even have to argue with your list...... Half of your list isn't even better than Mike Wallace do you even watch football?

All I will say is the Players' Top 100 was not accurate, it was their perception.  Players don't know about small-market teams, just like most fans.  Nicks should have been on that list, but he wasn't.  And the fact that Kyle Williams wasn't on it, but Donovan McNabb was, tells you just how reliable that list was.  Just because THE PLAYERS OMG voted on it doesn't make it a good measuring tool.
