The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton

Posted on: August 15, 2011 6:11 am

OPENING HIT: Remember when many fans and media said Cam Newton was going to be an arrogant toad in the NFL? He made some immature statements about being an iconic-entertaining-Academy-award-w
inning thespian. Sure, that was dumb. But have you seen and heard Newton lately?

He was interviewed following his first preseason game and when asked to evaluate his performance said: "I can do better." Teammates, I'm told, love him. He's been professional, hard working and, yes, a leader. These are tough days for the Cam Newton haters.

Now, it's early. Many quarterbacks look solid after one preseason game of playing against future UPS drivers. But if you're a Carolina fan, despite Newton's early career hour, this is still encouraging. Mainly because Newton hasn't resembled what so many thought he'd be--even this early.

Newton will need to improve accuracy (as do lots of young throwers) but considering he basically had two weeks of practice and outplayed Jimmy Clausen (who threw a pick six) his game against the Giants wasn't bad at all.

What Newton brings most now is confidence and the Panthers are a team that needs a massive injection of that.

ONLY SOMETHING THAT INTERESTS ME: At one point two different television networks were both claiming they broke news on a free agent wide receiver.

Osi Umenyiora: Just hurry up and sign. Or don't. Or do. Just do one or the other. Thanks.

LAST WORD: What are the Patriots doing? I'll be exploring this in the next few days but these are strange times in New England.

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton

Really? 1 week into the pre-season and Cams the best rookie quaterback ever? Guess again genius? His teamates arent going to say he's an idiot 2 weeks into the season. These things take time. I'd like to see your take 10 weeks from now. It will be a completely different story no doubt. He will perform like a rookie quarterback on a bad team like the last 100 in history have. Poorly. Not a knock on Cam but simply the reality of things in the NFL. Cam may be a decent quarterback 2 or 3 years down the road but now? No chance. My biggest beef is why even write this now. Stop wasting our time. Everyone on this website is now dumber after reading this article. What were writers saying about Ryan Leaf 1 game into his rookie year pre-season? Exactly! Please find something sensible to write about or please find another profession. Clearly sports writer is not the best fit for you.

Just to throw out there Cam's passer rating his incompletion tell the story that some of you people actually didn't see Cam playing against the Giants. Well yes his stats were no impressive but watching the Cam i was very impressed with him. One pass he threw for about a 30 yard completion and got the panthers into the red zone. Sure the numbers and the passer rating weren't good but watching this Kid play you could see its something special in him. I could tell most people posting on here didn't watch the game. Cause the numbers put up doenst tell half the story.

Comparing passer rating is useless in the preseason considering Clausen played 1 quarter, Newton played two quarters, and there are several other factors that aren't included in the passer rating equation. Actually, Christian Ponder and Andy Dalton looked like complete crap. Cam played ok for his first NFL action. Ryan Mallet played great versus the scrubs too.

@Boomer12 Well, it looks like you're a hater. I bet secretly you wish he was on your favorite team ;)

Anyhow, Cam is showing us why he was selected number one overall - the talent and potential. Sure he was playing against scrubs and his performance wasn't spectacular, but you saw immense potential. Considering this was a kid who took off running if option one wasn't open and the fact that he had zero rushing attempts in the game is encouraging to noting his development. He needs to work on accuracy and throwing off his back foot, but those are correctable. Cam could very well start week one and be successful.
It was the pre-season and he had terrible stats running basically the only 33% of the playbook ( if we're lucky to even assume he knew that much ) he has learned. Sure the guy has a strong arm and thats all the media cares about. Ask us how we like Cam after this season when we can look at his portfolio and make a legit analysis. Freeman you are obviously excited but please for our sakes retard your premature celebration.

I watched him play against the giant's first and second stringers and they guy looked like complete and utter crap. Pretty much like most rookies do.

I could not agree w you fact I was very surprised that this site would allow such an irrelevant article. I saw the game live but thought the best part of Cam's debut was how he handled himself w the media. The kid is going to be the starter but I am making an assumption saying it. That article was pointless and very biased. Perhaps an article of this nature would have relevance if it were week three of the regular season but at this point Cam has done nothing but show us he is well spoken and has very little competition as he prepares for his starting role. No offense to Jimmy...

Hmm...and check your facts. Clausen had a 90 passer rating, Newton had a 66 with a 42% completion....90 is better than 66. Once again, he didn't do badly but it was far from "how do you like him now" talk and not a better outing than Clausen, even with the pick 6. Just be unbiased. He did OK, he showed some poise and ability, but face it, he's still a rookie QB who, as of right now, has a lot of work to do. I don;t think he'll be that great but it's a judgement based on more than 19 throws in a preseason game against 2nd stringers.
