The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton

Posted on: August 15, 2011 6:11 am

OPENING HIT: Remember when many fans and media said Cam Newton was going to be an arrogant toad in the NFL? He made some immature statements about being an iconic-entertaining-Academy-award-w
inning thespian. Sure, that was dumb. But have you seen and heard Newton lately?

He was interviewed following his first preseason game and when asked to evaluate his performance said: "I can do better." Teammates, I'm told, love him. He's been professional, hard working and, yes, a leader. These are tough days for the Cam Newton haters.

Now, it's early. Many quarterbacks look solid after one preseason game of playing against future UPS drivers. But if you're a Carolina fan, despite Newton's early career hour, this is still encouraging. Mainly because Newton hasn't resembled what so many thought he'd be--even this early.

Newton will need to improve accuracy (as do lots of young throwers) but considering he basically had two weeks of practice and outplayed Jimmy Clausen (who threw a pick six) his game against the Giants wasn't bad at all.

What Newton brings most now is confidence and the Panthers are a team that needs a massive injection of that.

ONLY SOMETHING THAT INTERESTS ME: At one point two different television networks were both claiming they broke news on a free agent wide receiver.

Osi Umenyiora: Just hurry up and sign. Or don't. Or do. Just do one or the other. Thanks.

LAST WORD: What are the Patriots doing? I'll be exploring this in the next few days but these are strange times in New England.

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton

Im not going to say he did poorly or proved he can't make it...but to say he played well is a bit gracious...below 50% pass completion, no finishing drives, no TDs. It's not bad but its not what you want to see. Can we just be unbiased here and say he looked like a rookie QB? I have no doubt he'll be better than Jamarcus Russell, but let's stop looking at every game he's in like we need to decided whether he's the new Ryan Leaf or Peyton Manning? I mean the last thing supporters should want to do is put him on this pedastal he doesn't deserve, only to see him falter and get thrown under the bus. Happened to VY after some good play and now he's a backup. If you're one of the people believing he's going to be great and don't think his ego will be a problem, don't praise him for a "good game" that was actually average to poor against 2nd and 3rd string defenses. People build up their own egos quite a bit, but if you praise every tiny right decision he makes, it will have the same effect.

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton

What am I missing--clearly, Newton's SECOND title.  I'm only aware of the one NC Auburn has (for now), which was not, repeat not, won on heroics by Newton.  Yeah, he's a gamer.  Where I come from, so's David Eckstein, and you wouldn't pin your franchise hopes on him, would you?

I believe Newton has the tools--and I'll even grant him the intelligence, despite some evidence to the contrary--but guys like JaMarcus, Vince .. all supposed to be "the real deal."  VY, remember, was a new breed: he was Vick and Steve Young with not just the speed to out-run NFL linebackers, but the size to run them over if need be.  VY, remember, had improved his mechanics SOOOOO much that USC just couldn't contain him in that NC run.  VY, we all said, was a gamer.  So what if his passer rating stunk while he was starting at TN; the man was winning games.  He was THE REAL DEAL.

My advice: don't hate, wait.  Wait and see.  Give it at least a few regular season games.  Yeah, Clausen threw a pick six.  I'm sure Newton will some day too.  It happens to almost everyone, especially in that first year.

Last note: was Steve Smith just not confident enough for the Panthers that they needed a ROOKIE to come in and tell them they could play in the NFL?  What a ridiculous statement, Mr. Freeman. You find me a QB who isn't confident in the huddle, on the practice field, and in the locker room, and I'll show you a QB who's out of work.  The only way the Panthers are going to gain confidence is to WIN SOME GAMES. I seriously doubt that after two weeks of the Newton love-fest the veterans of the team are totally convinced.

Call me in Week 5.

Newton looked ok for a rookie...

However, sure doesnt seem to have much touch on those throws.... the 10 looks the same as the 40....just sayin.

Are we going to judge Cam Newton on a few throws vs. second stringers in a preseason game? He's still a steamy pile of dung until he proves he can play well for an entire season in games that count.

Mike how can you say something like that about Newton, when his pass rating was not that good. Maybe someday he will be a good QB and who knows he might be a better QB then you are a writer.Wink

What world does Mike Freeman live in?

Cam Newton went 8 of 19 (42%) for 134 yards and 0 TDs/0 INTs for a 66.6 passer rating (the mark of the beast)
Jimmy Clausen went 4 of 7 (57%) for 69 yards and 1 TD and 1 INT for a 90.8 passer rating.

Clausen faced starters, Newton back-ups and third stringers. Newton took sack after sack due to being unable to read the rather vanilla defenses...

No one expects him to be polished, he isn't and won't be for years if ever, but he didn't outplay anyone.

Just be happy he didn't copy and paste Peter King's entire article like he usually does.

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton

"These are tough days for the Cam Newton haters"  Sadly enough they continue to hate.  God forbid when he throws his first INT.

Too many are saying he is the real deal  Rocket arm, hard working and motivated to be the best.   For a rookie to come in with the 1st team and march down the field on a 9 play 62 yd drive. ON HIS 1ST DRIVE EVER!!!!  Then the 2 minute drill and get more points.  This shows the gamer in him.  He didn't win 2 titles by not having that GAMER attitude.  The will to win, they don't come along very often but guys like Unitas, Elway and Montana had the gamer quality about them.  Newton has it.  Wait till he brings the Panthers late in a game and pull it out.  He doesn't like to lose and he is in the right position to make sure he doesn't.

GO PANTHERS.....GO CAM NEWTON
