The Daily Shoutout: the Plax effect

OPENING HIT: First, there is a ban on Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg jokes. They're old. Get new material people.

Second, I told you Burress was going to be good. Yes, it's only the preseason and sure what he did on Sunday night was against the Bengals who constantly shoot themselves in the paw (dammit!). But Burress still caught a touchdown pass. He didn't look slow. Or rusty. Or like a guy who spent years away from the sport and I hate to say it but I told you so.

Think back to Mike Vick. He emerged from prison and played freaking quarterback at a high level. If he can play quarterback after a stint in the hoosegow, Burress could play wide receiver.

Burress is a tremendous athlete; always has been. It was only a matter of shaking off the rust and he was able to do that in a matter of weeks. A few more weeks from now it'll be like Burress never left the NFL.

The bigger question is can Burress stay out of trouble? Can he make the meetings on time? Will he work hard constantly? Will he put the effort into getting even better? If he does those things Burress could end up being one of the top five wide receivers in the sport this season. Maybe top three. Yes, I said top three. Just as long as he doesn't shoot...

Dammit!

FAN VIOLENCE: More ridiculousness and violence and stupidity at stadiums. There will always be violent idiots and there's only so much a team or league can do to slow some of this foolishness. The one thing leagues can do: massively increase security presence at games. It's not enough. I've covered games where fights break out and a security guard or police officer fails to show up or arrives far too late. I'd estimate security officials need to be doubled at most games. Do that and limit alcohol sales and this stuff would almost cease to exist.

THE Titans: So far, at least, they're calling Chris Johnson's bluff. There was a time I was certain Johnson's holdout would end once the season started. Now I'm not so sure. I'm told but someone close to Johnson that the runner has saved significant amounts of money. He isn't hurting. And it seems the Titans are willing to wait him out for a longer time than originally believed. So this one might take a bit.

The Daily Shoutout: the Plax effect

You guys gotta get over the fact that he just signed for a guranteed 3 million, which is more than you will make in your lifetime. You have to evaluate talent and disregard your biases. I'm not callin him Jerry Rice but you were the same clowns that said Randy Moss wuz done when he went to NE and set a single season TD reception record. I know you are not professionals, but I suspect you have been watchin football for some years and can give an intelligent evaluation of talent. Stop tryin to be the next Skip Bayless and trying to get famous by attacking highly talented atheletes and appealing to his haters for applause. This blog would be better served if all would give their best intelligent opinions instead of using it as the eastside gangs building wall of grafitti.

What a ridiculous article.

A) He made the TD versus the Bengals.

B) He made the TD versus a CB that the Bengals will likely cut.

Told you so?

No, no you did not.

Plaxico Burress is old and out of shape and the guy has had 3, or maybe 4 1K yard seasons in his 10 year career.

The guy will maybe bring in 700- 800 yards at most this year and 3-4 TD's.

Plax is a waste of Oxygen.

Whoa!!! You guys are missing the big picture on this one. First it was big for Burress to make that play for him, he needed to see he could still do it at this level. You say well it was just the Bengals but they are still an NFL team. It was only preseason but it was still in the first half, those guys will make the final roster. It was raining and sloppy out but yet he still put up numbers that were good.

This is really a big thing bc what it does for the Jets, it makes them have a legit 3 wr set. They have sure hands Mason and big play Burress and Holmes. That is a tough 3 wide set then add a good TE and solid running game their offense might be better then last year. Burress doesnt need to do anything, they have Mason for a possesion receiver and Holmes for the big play threat. Whatvere Burress does is extra icing on the cake. This makes the Jets better then we thought. This was a big deal, welcome back Plax!

Freeman, you're kidding right? You are saying, and basing your evaluation, on that pre-season game against the Bengals. You almost get your credibility back when you go on to say that you know it was one td pass and it was against the Bengals, but you lose it, and any other brain cell you may have had when you call him good and that you told us so! Sounds like you're arguing with yourself.

The only correct thing you said is that it is only one game and it was against the Bengals. You should have left it at that. It may turn out to be true that Plaxico is good, and that you were correct, but because of this article you will still look like a fool.

One should not be to hasty in giving oneself a pat on the back for thinking they were correct because, it has a way of coming around and biting you in the kiester!

yes, let's hold off on the "I told you so" re Plax until 10 games into the regular season. I can name 5 WR's who's name you will not even know who've had good preseason games so far this year. he still needs to prove he can be consistent, keep his wind and stay healthy.. and weren't you the one who just wrote a the scathing piece on Plax and how he hasn't learned his lesson...hmm. So let's take it easy
