The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

OPENING HIT: I had forgotten about this and was reminded after reading an item in Profootballtalk.com. Now, I remember just how arrogantly owner Jerry Richardson behaved when he met quarterback Cam Newton.

Let me explain. In a recent television interview Richardson recalled his interview with Newton. At one point he told Newton: "Do you have any tattoos? He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’  He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘We want to keep it that way..."

“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut," said Richardson.

What?

Richardson's point is: Newton is the face of the franchise and the face of the franchise shouldn't have tattoos or piercings. Some of you will agree with this. Actually, most of you likely will but I find this stunning and part of the trend of football today in which players have decreasing rights from owners and the commissioner.

A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top.

Newton is a football player, not a head of state. He's not leading Microsoft. He's a freaking quarterback. Who cares if he has his ear pierced?

And let me ask this: how many Panther fans do you think have tattoos or piercings? Or NFL fans in general? I'm guessing it's not an insignificant number. Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?

But again, this is the era we're in. When an owner can tell a prospect whether or not he can get a tattoo.

Next up for Richardson: he instructs Newton on who he can date.

My hope is that Newton gets a tattoo that reads "Jerry Richardson told me not to get this."

Good for the owner.  He wants CAM to be the face of the franchise, what is wrong with wanting the face of the franchise to be clean cut tattoo and piercing free.  I am a business owner with a sales staff of 15 men and women.  If I can not see a tattoo or peircing when someone wears a 1/2 sleeve shirt or in a womens case a skirt then that is fine.  But I will not hire anyone who has tattoos on their legs, arms, neck or face.  I also will not hire anyone who has those big disk in their ears. If a guy has an earring or big earring hole no second interview.  If a girl has more then 4 earring holes in 1 ear no second interview.

In my business these people deal with the whole spectrum of employees at a company from warehouse people to CEO's and board members.  They also work with companies from all over the world.  So what may be exceptable dress or style in San Francisco, LA or NY may not be looked on favorably in the heart land of the US, Japan, or other regions of the world.

No my guys do not make tens of millions a dollars per contract.  But my reps make between $125k to $800k per year.

I am not against free expression or having the government or anyone else tell you how to live your life.  But 80% of the business world is PC, so if you want to make the big bucks then you need to play the game.

If you are happy making $75k a year and have tattoos and peircings and your boss does not mine, fine, live your life the way you want.  But if you want to move up and be in contact with customers and make large commissions then before you get those tattoos and peircings ask yourself do you want to be well off or do you want to move up in the corporate world and be the face of a company or in Cam's situation the face of a Franchise.

In my Humble opinion.. as much as these players are getting paid, they should have more rules implemented and penalties for not abiding by the rules set down. They may be players , however, they ar still being paid, so just like any other business, follow the rules or don't play.

Correct, he is not president of some company or of the US.  Problem is, todays kids look up to quarterbacks more than they do to the President.... So I agree, they are role models whether they like it or not, and I'd love to see these "role models" clean it up a bit!!!

This is really pretty easy...you come to work with Tatoos that show what would your boss do. If the company poilcy has been written down then the employer has the right to enforce the policy, or have that written in the contract. If he forgets having it in the contract then he may trade or let go of the draft pick to go elsewhere. Thinks about yourself and what would you boss do? (or company)

I'm kind of torn on this one.  On one side, the NFL is a business, and owners/CEO's have the require "dress codes."  Everywhere I've ever worked had dress codes.  I can understand Jerry Richardson wanting the Panthers to be a nice, wholesome role model for fans young and old.  On the other side, it seems wrong to require something of only one of the players on the team, even if it is the "face" of the team.  Who knows...maybe it's not even an issue for Mr. Newton.

Just an old man trying to make sure the world fits his view of it. It's funny when employers take their personal opinions and try to make it company policy. Qualified, skilled employees just ignore it, knowing it has nothing to do with doing a good job.

Newton probably knows full well he can still do what he wants.  What's Richardson going to do if he goes and gets a tattoo?  Release or trade him?  I think not.  The backlash on Richardson if he threw away the top pick in the draft like that would be horrendous.  And Richardson can't fine or suspend him either.  Not for that... it'd be a legal nightmare (and ultimately a loss) if he tried.

Newton may not do it just because he wants to keep the peace (or because you know, maybe he just doesn't want any tattoos or piercings to begin with).  But he certainly isn't under any obligation to follow that appearance code.
