The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

OPENING HIT: I had forgotten about this and was reminded after reading an item in Profootballtalk.com. Now, I remember just how arrogantly owner Jerry Richardson behaved when he met quarterback Cam Newton.

Let me explain. In a recent television interview Richardson recalled his interview with Newton. At one point he told Newton: "Do you have any tattoos? He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’  He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘We want to keep it that way..."

“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut," said Richardson.

What?

Richardson's point is: Newton is the face of the franchise and the face of the franchise shouldn't have tattoos or piercings. Some of you will agree with this. Actually, most of you likely will but I find this stunning and part of the trend of football today in which players have decreasing rights from owners and the commissioner.

A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top.

Newton is a football player, not a head of state. He's not leading Microsoft. He's a freaking quarterback. Who cares if he has his ear pierced?

And let me ask this: how many Panther fans do you think have tattoos or piercings? Or NFL fans in general? I'm guessing it's not an insignificant number. Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?

But again, this is the era we're in. When an owner can tell a prospect whether or not he can get a tattoo.

Next up for Richardson: he instructs Newton on who he can date.

My hope is that Newton gets a tattoo that reads "Jerry Richardson told me not to get this."

Tattoos... I really dont see a problem with em at all, in the "right spots". All of mine are hidden when they need to be. Pants and long sleeve shirt. Problem solved. Earrings.... they can be removed. I could see Richardson having a problem if looked like Dennis Rodman or something like that, but if he's good at his job (which we will see soon) and is a well spoken young MAN, Jerry should just mind his business.

Imagine the "Havoc" if he did have em both after drafting Cam.

GO PANTHERS!

Me personally, I'm going to raise my children with morals and principles and he'll apply what he feels is right based on my effectivenesss as a mentor.  Society is not responsible for my childrens choices, I am.  You get them from birth, society gets them long after you should have taken a solid affect on your children.

Not a good arguement...someone put it good earlier, does your office have 20 cheerleaders scantily clad running around trying to get you all to stand up and do the wave?  Is there a mascot in your office, mooning everyone and messing around with the referees in your office?  Or conversly, I have yet to see a computer on the football field, let alone a football player surfing porn on the field.  Two TOTALLY different worlds.  Not to mention, your boss doesn't tell you not to surf porn in your own time, or tell you who you can and can't date.

I am with Richardson. I am happy Cam is piercing free and tatoo free.  Athletes of late get this stuff out of peer pressure obligation.  Every single player in the NBA is tatted up right now, and NFL players don't appear to be too far behind. Now he is no longer part of the modern athlete norm.  My kid can now look up to athletes like McNabb, Newton, the Mannings, Ryan, Flacco, and others without thinking about getting inked or having freakin diamond stud in his ear.  If we can just get wide receivers, running backs, linebackers, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, and defensive backs on board.  The quaterback may be the only position, where this standard can be applied.

Loved the sarcastic nature of this post, but this is irrelevant.

"They hired me for my intellectual abilities, how does it matter what goes into my body, and how doped my mind is when I am at work, as long as I get stuff done"

Unless you're smoking pot before work, your mind won't be doped. And depending on what kind of work you do, pot may actually HELP you in your job.

Richardson is an arrogant bleep

I don't much like tats, either, but I wouldn't tell a football player he couldn't have them.  Players are overpaid, but it's because agents and owners drive up the prices.  Overpaying players is no excuse for trying to deprive them of their rights in their personal lives.  Richardson needs to go back to his office and bully someone who he pays to take it.

"The only thing worse than being tatted and pierced in the south is to be a tatted and pierced yankee in the south."

Born in NY, raised in NJ, tatted and pierced, living in the South.   Thank you for understanding my pain. =)

90% of the players on the team are black. He has one damn, barely questionable, incident and now it's racially motivated?? You people should give it up! Every freakin occurrence of a white man vs black man episode or circumstance is not grounds for revoking a civil rights movement. As a black man, it pisses me the hell off when the race card is pulled everytime another black person of presumed to be persecuted by a person of another race. Do I think it still exist? Yea! I live in SC. But every white person is not out to get black people. It is belligerent ignorance on your part to even misconstrue the man's motives in the first place, let alone label the man a racist!

I think as a grown ass man, it is unfair for my office to prohibit a ban on surfing porn from work. It impedes so many of my basic rights and freedoms that it is not funny. They have the gall to tell me that I cannot surf or partake in internet content that is racially prejudiced, religious invective, or even sexually discriminatory. How unfair is that? I mean, I am a grown-ass man, and it is my mind, my eyes, and my ears that will be affected.
Oh, and I can't even have relationships with co-workers. What's the deal with that? I am a grown ass man, and I should be able to tonk any bird that mutually consents, right? Cam Newton is being subjected to all kinds of horrors. Poor chap. Oh, and what's with the anti-drug policy? I should be able to smoke as much pot as I want. They hired me for my intellectual abilities, how does it matter what goes into my body, and how doped my mind is when I am at work, as long as I get stuff done. So unfair! And how about those restaurants which say, "No shoes, no shirt, no service" - sick, right? And I can't even bring my dog to work. So many rules. Poor Cam Newton.
