The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

OPENING HIT: I had forgotten about this and was reminded after reading an item in Now, I remember just how arrogantly owner Jerry Richardson behaved when he met quarterback Cam Newton.

Let me explain. In a recent television interview Richardson recalled his interview with Newton. At one point he told Newton: "Do you have any tattoos? He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’  He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘We want to keep it that way..."

“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut," said Richardson.

Richardson's point is: Newton is the face of the franchise and the face of the franchise shouldn't have tattoos or piercings. Some of you will agree with this. Actually, most of you likely will but I find this stunning and part of the trend of football today in which players have decreasing rights from owners and the commissioner.

A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top.

Newton is a football player, not a head of state. He's not leading Microsoft. He's a freaking quarterback. Who cares if he has his ear pierced?

And let me ask this: how many Panther fans do you think have tattoos or piercings? Or NFL fans in general? I'm guessing it's not an insignificant number. Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?

But again, this is the era we're in. When an owner can tell a prospect whether or not he can get a tattoo.

Next up for Richardson: he instructs Newton on who he can date.

My hope is that Newton gets a tattoo that reads "Jerry Richardson told me not to get this."

Yea, absolutely right, no way someone should be able to pay someone $20,000,000 and request them not to have any tattoo's or piercing's.  That is old fashion thinking that the person paying the $20,000,000 should even be able to make any kind of rules at all.

I can't believe this writer called Cam Newton an "...ass man..." this is way over the line.  This guy is supposed to be professional and commenting on other people's judgement and he is calling Newton an "...ass man...".  These guys are dirt bags.

First of all this is not a very detailed, well thought out article. Is there an overall team policy that requires this of all their players? Was the same thing asked of Jimmy Clausen when he was drafted as well as any other draft picks made by the Panthers?

If the answer is yes to both then I absolutely have no problem with this....however in looking at many of the players on the Panthers team I somehow doubt that is true.

You can not and should not require of one individual in your organization what you do not require of all other individuals in that organization.  If this is the case and Cam is being singled out in this respect that is not right.  If Cam is the only player/coach subject to this requirement it is in no way similar to the Yankees organization or any organization you may work for. I guarantee that if rules applied to any of us in our place of business that didn't apply to others we all would definately have a problem with it.

Having said that gather more facts that reveal the entire picture before writing an "article".

My 2 cents: This pick was very important for the Panthers. Cam Newton was going to be drafted early regardless. Mr. Richardson knew he was going to be investing his franchise worth a lot of zero's after at least one whole number and he has every right to make sure he is comfortable with his future investment. I am eager to see what this young man can do with that struggling franchise. Expectations are high...I wish him luck.

I work for a corporation. If I tattoo my body up and have piercings, then I doubt they would have hired me. Do you think I like getting my hair cut and having to look all professional. No I don't. I do it because that is what a corporation wants. So I play the game. I could get tattoos then I can expect to have to find another job if they show at work. I don't think it is unreasonable for them to ask that. Cam doesn't have to work there now does he.

i think most of you are forgetting several things here. first of all, as a quarterback on a pro team, he will be a role model to a lot of young men.  there are so many bad role models and people looking like thugs, that i think jerry has every right to ask this.  Does this seem like a tough request to have considering the compensation cam will be getting? in the old days, did people at ibm stomp their feet and refuse to where blue suits? no.

Mr Richardsons request is frought with pitfalls. First is the obvious discrimination aspect as this request was issued to an individule not the team. Second is the legacy issue in that the Panthers have and will continue to field players with Tat's and jewelry. For safety reasons you can ask players to remove all jewelry during practice and games and you are correct for doing so.
Jerry Richardson is just a bit old fashioned...kinda like hearing me say kids need to pull up their damn pants. The question of boxers or briefs should be answered in cosmo surveys not witnessed first hand!
