The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

OPENING HIT: I had forgotten about this and was reminded after reading an item in Now, I remember just how arrogantly owner Jerry Richardson behaved when he met quarterback Cam Newton.

Let me explain. In a recent television interview Richardson recalled his interview with Newton. At one point he told Newton: "Do you have any tattoos? He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’  He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘We want to keep it that way..."

“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut," said Richardson.

Richardson's point is: Newton is the face of the franchise and the face of the franchise shouldn't have tattoos or piercings. Some of you will agree with this. Actually, most of you likely will but I find this stunning and part of the trend of football today in which players have decreasing rights from owners and the commissioner.

A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top.

Newton is a football player, not a head of state. He's not leading Microsoft. He's a freaking quarterback. Who cares if he has his ear pierced?

And let me ask this: how many Panther fans do you think have tattoos or piercings? Or NFL fans in general? I'm guessing it's not an insignificant number. Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?

But again, this is the era we're in. When an owner can tell a prospect whether or not he can get a tattoo.

Next up for Richardson: he instructs Newton on who he can date.

My hope is that Newton gets a tattoo that reads "Jerry Richardson told me not to get this."

You have to realize that Freeman is a Racist himself, and likes to take the spotlight off that anytime he can.  Anytime he can draw the race card he does.  Hypocite/Bigot  those are two good names that come to mind when I think of Freeman.  You know though, the NFL is just a modern day slave trade anyway, huh Freeman.  Only thing is Blacks  enslave their own people more than any White person did.  Report on that Mike.  When you going to Africa to help your people Mike?

As much as I disagree with you on the entirity of your comment it is is true to a point.  Yes, all people who are racist against black people are most likely whites.  No kidding.  However, I gaurantee you there are just as many black conservatives who agree in principal about no tattoos and no earings, but will side with the black player because it's perceived as a racial issue.  I mean, it would be difficult to be a black person who hates tattoos and earings and agree with Richardson, right?  This whole race card is played out.  Is it still played by some old knuckleheds who I agree should die off, yes.  The only way it's empowered though is if we feed it with sensless specualtion like this.  Do I think Richardson's comments were racially based, I actually do.  What if Payton Manning had a tattoo and an earing and for some unkown reason, and you can tell this is the most obvious hypothetical example ever, said he wanted to play for the Panthers.  Do you think Richardson would say no?  HA!  If I were Cam I would get as many tattoos and earings as I wanted.  You want him to bloody and bruise his body for you, but he can't do it for his own reasons?  REDICULOUS!

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

Last time I checked, football is a business; called entertainment.  The person who owns the entertainment company has every right to dictate how its employees look.  Mr. Freeman, have you forgotten so quickly (post lockout) that it is the owners who are driving the NFL bus and not the players.  I work for a bank and just took a position with another bank.  My new employer clearly stated in my exceptance letter that no body piercings (other than ear rings) may be visable and no tatoos shall be visable.  If I want to wear my 5 lip rings (which thankfully I do not have), I have an easy choice; either find another job or comply.
Why is this such a difficult concept for you to grasp, Mr. Freeman.  Unless of course you are going to drudge up the race card that you use so often.  Maybe Mr. Richardson wants the face of HIS franchise (ie company) to be just that...A FACE and not an ad campaign for a jewelry store or a tatoo parlor!!

All business owners have employee conduct policies. Why is it ok to fight those in the NFL. I bet when Cam wants to hold out for more money all the sudden its not about him its about business.

I understand how many would think that Richardson is a racist, and they're probably right, but if I owned a business and I wanted to make a talented African American athlete the face of my business, I wouldn't want him coming in looking like some graffiti-covered, project wall from the ghetto. If that's what you want to "represent", then choose some other place to do it. I think as a business owner he's within his right to ask these questions. There are other places that may not care how a players body looks, but that's their prerogative, here he doesn't choose to express that perspective with his club.

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

Damn it's 2011 and people still have taboo's about tattos, piercings and the such. "You have a nice haircut"! Which means if he came in with braids or dreads he wouldn't have a nice haircut? I really can't wait for people of his type(Jerry Richardson) to die off so this world can be a better place.

And Cam is no better. Is this what we have come to as a society? People scared or not willing to be themselves for a couple of green pieces of papers with dead wig wearing "f"-words on them. It's people like Cam who continue to go along with these outlandish "rules" that keep these guys doing what they do.
