The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

OPENING HIT: I had forgotten about this and was reminded after reading an item in Profootballtalk.com. Now, I remember just how arrogantly owner Jerry Richardson behaved when he met quarterback Cam Newton.

Let me explain. In a recent television interview Richardson recalled his interview with Newton. At one point he told Newton: "Do you have any tattoos? He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’  He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘We want to keep it that way..."

“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut," said Richardson.

What?

Richardson's point is: Newton is the face of the franchise and the face of the franchise shouldn't have tattoos or piercings. Some of you will agree with this. Actually, most of you likely will but I find this stunning and part of the trend of football today in which players have decreasing rights from owners and the commissioner.

A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top.

Newton is a football player, not a head of state. He's not leading Microsoft. He's a freaking quarterback. Who cares if he has his ear pierced?

And let me ask this: how many Panther fans do you think have tattoos or piercings? Or NFL fans in general? I'm guessing it's not an insignificant number. Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?

But again, this is the era we're in. When an owner can tell a prospect whether or not he can get a tattoo.

Next up for Richardson: he instructs Newton on who he can date.

My hope is that Newton gets a tattoo that reads "Jerry Richardson told me not to get this."

Freeman...shut up. Richardson owns the team. He makes the rules. If Newton wants to deface his body by permanently scarring or jabbing inanimate objects into it, then he should ask to be traded to the Panthers. When you take a job with a private company you follow the rules of that company. If they tell you to wear a suit and tie, then you wear the suit and tie. If they tell you to wear a chicken suit and do the macarena, then that's what  you do if you want to keep your job.

Players rights aren't being eroded in the NFL, you're just assuming a total sum as the base you start from. Meaning you think players start with the "right" to do whatever the heck they want and if a team OWNER says you can't do something, then that is allegedly a right taken away. Well that's crap. What you are proposing is to take away the right of the owner to run the team (his company) the way he sees fit by allowing an employee to dictate policy, specifically that of appearance. Well....freakin' thank you, Mr. Stalin. Perhaps now I can get Cam's autograph when I meet him in the bread line.

I agree with Richardson.  He is paying Cam very well to play football and represent his company.  The owener knows there is a significant percentage of the population that does not like the tatoo/piercing look and will most likely not purchase his product if it has those attributes (tatoos/piercings).  Believe it or not many American adults look at this as gangster/jail house even if it is not and they will not support it.

Forget the topic, which is pretty bland at best, this is a poorly written article.

Is this what an "Insider" brings to the conversation???  Where's the inside information???  Quoting a TV interview???

I previously assumed that Mike Freeman was employed by CBS but now I hope he's not.  If he's just a fan who blogs then I'll cut him some slack.  If this is how cbssports.com increases the value of their site with interesting content, well, I think they need to review their journalistic standards.  In the rush for copy, some times saying nothing is more valuable than some thing amateurish.

Sadly the topic might be an interesting one that could spark conversation as it pertains to the roles of being an employee and having your compensation being directly related to how much income the team/league is able to generate from fans, television, sponsors, etc.

I will say that Mr. Freeman avoided major typos although I do wonder if it's "grown ass" or "grown-ass"???

Regardless, I'm left to wonder if this is the new standard of journalism???

If you're just a fan than I apologize.  If you're a professional, please set up your game.

wow!!  what a poorly written, racially-charged, anti-ownership comment.  so, a person has to be a head of state or the leader of microsoft to be directed on appearance?  really?  lol.

I agree with the owner 100%. He is the owner so that means he is the boss if the boss wants a strict dress code then thats what he will get. I work in the oil field and we have a dress code no facial hair shirt has to be tucked in no rings or ear rings no necklacees their rules you dont like find another job!!!  The writer of this article needs to grow up sounds lke someone who has never had a real job and still lives in mom and dad basement. I can't beleive cbs allowed this article to even get on the web.
