The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

OPENING HIT: I had forgotten about this and was reminded after reading an item in Profootballtalk.com. Now, I remember just how arrogantly owner Jerry Richardson behaved when he met quarterback Cam Newton.

Let me explain. In a recent television interview Richardson recalled his interview with Newton. At one point he told Newton: "Do you have any tattoos? He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’  He said, ‘No, sir.  I don’t have any.’  I said, ‘We want to keep it that way..."

“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut," said Richardson.

What?

Richardson's point is: Newton is the face of the franchise and the face of the franchise shouldn't have tattoos or piercings. Some of you will agree with this. Actually, most of you likely will but I find this stunning and part of the trend of football today in which players have decreasing rights from owners and the commissioner.

A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top.

Newton is a football player, not a head of state. He's not leading Microsoft. He's a freaking quarterback. Who cares if he has his ear pierced?

And let me ask this: how many Panther fans do you think have tattoos or piercings? Or NFL fans in general? I'm guessing it's not an insignificant number. Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?

But again, this is the era we're in. When an owner can tell a prospect whether or not he can get a tattoo.

Next up for Richardson: he instructs Newton on who he can date.

My hope is that Newton gets a tattoo that reads "Jerry Richardson told me not to get this."

"Are Panthers fans who have a tattoo the dirtbags Richardson apparently thinks they are?"
Who said anything about Richardson thinking people are "dirtbags" for getting or having tattoo?
Mike, I like your articles but this is a case of you sticking up for someone blindly. I gotta ask the question, if Cam Newton was white would you have the same comment? No, you wouldn't. You owe an apology to Richardson for putting words in his mouth that he is calling Panthers fans "dirtbags" for having a tattoo. Richardson never said that. Get back in the middle and quit trying to play the race card at every turn just to get a cheap pop from your readers. It's ridiculous

#1 pick

Gobs of money

Face of Franchise

IT'S CALLED A FRIGGING DRESS CODE! GET OVER IT! If as the owner of the team who employs Newton doesn't want Tats, then Newton shouldn't get Tats out of respect for the guy that is paying him more money than I'll ever see in my entire life. Surely whatever millions is reason enough to not get a tattoo.

Freeman...you may be a decent person, but this is Bush League writing.  Seriously, I'll scan my Broadcasting Degree, so you know what one looks like.  Two quick points: (1) See New York Yankees (no beard/ no long hair).  (2) Scam should do what Richardson wants, considering he's already stealing Richardson's money!

The Daily Shoutout: Cam Newton, no tattoos

Another ridculous over the top article. Another attempt by a writer to create something out of nothing. Another knee-jerk reaction by an attention starved hack.

Richardson can not tell Newton whether he can or cannot have tatoos, but he sure as hell has the right to suggest to a grown ass man look a certain way. He has the right to suggest a grown ass man present himself in a certain manner. He has the right to suggest a grown ass man act in a certain way. The quote is "we want" not "you will". Read before you write.

Then again what right do you have to tell a grown ass man he can't make a suggestion about something to someone.

Not sure what dress cose where Freeeman's work is but any respectable business has one.  Richardson is paying him millions of dollars to represent the Panthers....doesn't seem like an unreasonable request.  I'd do a lot more for a lot less.......

Slavery??  Comments like this really are offensive, and they completely trivialize what an injustice actual slavery is.  He lives in a free society, and when he willingly enters into a contract to exchange his labor for Mr. Richardson's money, he also makes a commitment to represent Mr. Richardson in a way which Mr. Richardson desires.  I work at a bank.  How do you think my employer would react if I showed up tomorrow with a blue mohawk and a tatoo of Osama Bin Laden on the side of my face?  Am I a slave because that would be prohibited?

"A dress code is one thing. But telling a grown ass man what he can do with his own body is way over the top."
i think this sentence is over the top
Richardson knows his fan base and doesnt want the "face" of the team to look like A.Iverson. nfl is about marketing and to have a guy all tat'd up might look bad for his team sine he does OWN it he has to look at the long term future of the team
