Manning may miss half the season

After seeing Colts owner Jim Irsay's tweet that his star quarterback Peyton Manning may be "out for awhile" a source on the team explained to me the organization is preparing for Manning to miss a large swath of the season, if not all of it.

Now, to be clear: that doesn't mean Manning will miss the season but the Colts' coaches have been told to prepare the players for life without their star.

What's becoming clear is that the Colts know far more than they're saying publicly. This is not a shock considering the extreme anti-media, anti-information release mindset of Bill Polian, the team's general manager. My guess is the upper levels of the team know exactly what's going on and have decided to release information at a trickle. It seems only Irsay and his Twitter machine are willing to share information. I'm guessing Polian would like to snatch Irsay's computer out of his hands.

The source indicated that Manning has not had an additional surgery. The problem is that Manning's neck continues to heal slowly. The nerve regeneration is proceeding at a far slower pace than expected.

So the Colts are simply being cautious. They want to protect Manning's health.

But the Colts source emphasized caution in saying Manning would be gone for the year. It's been explained to the staff that Manning's neck could suddenly start healing normally and he could play.

For now, however, the Colts are preparing for the immediate future without Manning.

Manning may miss half the season

Will this become a career issue? I don't expect it could be a surprise "Manning is retiring tomorrow" thing, but is it the type of thing that will continue to hurt his play or dependability? In which case is this the end of the Colts run? I say yes. The team will be revealed to be far below average w/o the head man (coaching staff and team), and the organization will be forced to being preparation for life after Manning. Manning will continue to play, but as a team is taken apart, reformed, rebuilt and changed to match more general QB play, while a new QB will start to be groomed. I think it could be a rough end to a brilliant career.

Dude, alot of us like to watch and play golf. I can understand your statement though
since you probably don't have a TV in your trailer down there in the Alabama backwoods.
Yee haw!

HA

Yeah count the rings won by Tommy Maddox, Kordell Stewart, and Mike Tomczak.  The system has been the same for decades idiot.

Manning may miss half the season

Always sucks when we have an NFL season without one of the stars, especially a star QB. Love or hate NE, the year Brady broke his leg Week 1 and was lost the entire season, it just felt like there was something missing.

This is also a testament to Favre's consecutive games played streak. I just see any way in today's era of football that record can be broken.

Just saw crawler on espnu. Didn't say what he had performed. If he had a fusion is will be at least 6 weeks. I would hate to be the surgeon that did the first surgery, and probably this one also.

Manning may miss half the season

If you think by drafting Andrew Luck you can replace a Peyton Manning you have lost your mind.  Manning is one of the Greatest QB's of all time!

Manning may miss half the season

This sounds to me it's much more serious than realized. Is it possible that Peyton is one hit away from retirement? The surgery was in May, and the lockout had nothing to do with getting back in shape. Colts fans should really be concerned.

Manning may miss half the season

The difference between Ben and Peyton situations are that Ben wasn't injured, just suspended. Who knows how long it is going to take Peyton to get ready, even if he does come back? How strong is his arm going to be? If his neck is less than 100%, it will effect his ability to throw.
