Manning may miss half the season

After seeing Colts owner Jim Irsay's tweet that his star quarterback Peyton Manning may be "out for awhile" a source on the team explained to me the organization is preparing for Manning to miss a large swath of the season, if not all of it.

Now, to be clear: that doesn't mean Manning will miss the season but the Colts' coaches have been told to prepare the players for life without their star.

What's becoming clear is that the Colts know far more than they're saying publicly. This is not a shock considering the extreme anti-media, anti-information release mindset of Bill Polian, the team's general manager. My guess is the upper levels of the team know exactly what's going on and have decided to release information at a trickle. It seems only Irsay and his Twitter machine are willing to share information. I'm guessing Polian would like to snatch Irsay's computer out of his hands.

The source indicated that Manning has not had an additional surgery. The problem is that Manning's neck continues to heal slowly. The nerve regeneration is proceeding at a far slower pace than expected.

So the Colts are simply being cautious. They want to protect Manning's health.

But the Colts source emphasized caution in saying Manning would be gone for the year. It's been explained to the staff that Manning's neck could suddenly start healing normally and he could play.

For now, however, the Colts are preparing for the immediate future without Manning.

Manning may miss half the season

Last year, the Steelers overcame Big Ben's month long MIA on their way to the SB.  Not expecting similar results from the Colts but didn't expect the black & gold to do what they did.~~~~~The difference is that the Steelers are built to win by defense and running tge ball and need only average QB play. As a result they did not miss Ben Roethisberger's average play, and his average back-ups did fine. There is a world of difference between Peyton Manning and Ben. Manning is the best QB in the game, and the Colts were built around having that type of player at QB. The Steelers experience no drop off in play when Byron Leftwich, Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch are in because of their similar talent level. No one that follows the game closely was surprised.

Manning may miss half the season

I wish sports writers could miss the whole season.  What a joy it would be to open CBS and not be subjected to Freemans idiotic artice day after day.

If Freeman is not race baiting he is stating the obvious.  This is why I made ESPN my homepage instead of CBS.

Manning may miss half the season

Could you please highlight the areas in Freeman's post that read "Manning's doctors" because I can't find them. The only thing that I can find is "source".

That was a joke you moron. The only people that really know Manning's condition and outlook are him and his doctors. I am pretty sure none of them are Freeman's sources. Freeman loves to jump on the rumor train.

Manning may miss half the season

Well, I guess we'll now see what kind of team the Colts actually have.  Last year, the Steelers overcame Big Ben's month long MIA on their way to the SB.  Not expecting similar results from the Colts but didn't expect the black & gold to do what they did.  It's easy to say they'll tank in his absence, however, this gives ample opportunity for others to step up & cover Manning's back.  Should be interesting in Indy.  Good luck.

Manning may miss half the season

Amazing how stupid some of the people on here are. Did i just say that? It's not amazing at all just the norm. The Colts don't care anything about the money, they have tons of money. Just you dweebs that have nothing are worried about it. You are fans of football don't worry about money it means nothing to the normal fan. Manning may come back he may never come back. He has been the best QB in the game for 10 years. If he never plays again it will be the fans that are the losers. He is set for life financialy and will be in the hall of fame first ballot. He is not worried. Football needs player like Manning, like Favre, like Vick. Without them the game is much the worse off. Look at golf without Tiger Woods, Watch any golf lately? Grow up and get a grip tools.

Manning may miss half the season

Why do we have to run to the opposite corner of the room on every freaking subject?  Manning didn't kill dogs for kicks.  Does that make you feel better?

Chances are extremely good that Manning or Vick will not be guaranteed all of their respective contracts if they do not play for extended periods of time.  If the ownership group who agreed to those deals are that stupid (and betting they are not), they deserve to lose huge chunks of their cash.

Manning may miss half the season

Now maybe the NFL will get off its knees to Manning & the Colts.  The NFL is rediculous with how it just goes on & on w/ its Manning love fest.  Hopefully this is the end of Manning's career.
Great post. But coming from a "ewwww" fan wouldn't expect much else. I know some "ewwww" fans have class, but most are like this individual. You can always go to espn where they are in with your "ewwww".

Manning may miss half the season

It could be that the Colts are releasing updates in a trickle to avoid harsh criticism for being completre dumba**es. Who on the Colts medically cleared Manning for this contract? Who in the FO made sure the Colts' attorneys approved that clearance, and dotted the 'i's' and crossed all the 't's'. Why wasn't there a contract void/restriction for this known pre-existing condition?  There has to be a lot of red faces in the FO right now.
Good thing Manning isn't black, or instead of blaming the team everyone on here would be screaming what a greedy thug Manning was for signing the contract when he knew he was injured and could miss the year or even have to retire.

Heck look at all the complaining about Vick and the claims he will get injured.  Manning was and is ACTUALLY injured but you don't hear a peep from these people.  Instead it's all about how bad the team would be or how it's all on the FO.

Totally transparent to me and anyone with a brain, but I know most of you don't.
