Manning may miss half the season

After seeing Colts owner Jim Irsay's tweet that his star quarterback Peyton Manning may be "out for awhile" a source on the team explained to me the organization is preparing for Manning to miss a large swath of the season, if not all of it.

Now, to be clear: that doesn't mean Manning will miss the season but the Colts' coaches have been told to prepare the players for life without their star.

What's becoming clear is that the Colts know far more than they're saying publicly. This is not a shock considering the extreme anti-media, anti-information release mindset of Bill Polian, the team's general manager. My guess is the upper levels of the team know exactly what's going on and have decided to release information at a trickle. It seems only Irsay and his Twitter machine are willing to share information. I'm guessing Polian would like to snatch Irsay's computer out of his hands.

The source indicated that Manning has not had an additional surgery. The problem is that Manning's neck continues to heal slowly. The nerve regeneration is proceeding at a far slower pace than expected.

So the Colts are simply being cautious. They want to protect Manning's health.

But the Colts source emphasized caution in saying Manning would be gone for the year. It's been explained to the staff that Manning's neck could suddenly start healing normally and he could play.

For now, however, the Colts are preparing for the immediate future without Manning.

Manning may miss half the season

"Believing Manning would make a full recovery, the Colts signed him to a five-year, $90 million contract extension this offseason. Profootballtalk.com reported that Manning would still collect $55 million from the Colts even if his career were ended by injury."

It could be that the Colts are releasing updates in a trickle to avoid harsh criticism for being completre dumba**es. Who on the Colts medically cleared Manning for this contract? Who in the FO made sure the Colts' attorneys approved that clearance, and dotted the 'i's' and crossed all the 't's'. Why wasn't there a contract void/restriction for this known pre-existing condition?  There has to be a lot of red faces in the FO right now.

Manning may miss half the season

You have to take a neck injury very seriously. It might just take him the year to get over this. A buddy of mine had a bad ACL tear and it was about 8 months to get back to work. If it does take him a year its a big blow to the Colts fans the most, because no one knows how the team will react. Time will tell but it still sucks for the team and league.

Manning may miss half the season

Rumors abound at this point. Now I've heard everything from another surgery this past Sunday or Monday to no surgery and a slower than projected healing process. The only thing that is for sure at this point is Manning is missing game one. I'm a Seahawks fan but I feel the Colts are playing this out how they should, on a weekly basis.

Manning may miss half the season

On the contrary, I don't know how this point isn't well taken.  As a Christian, I feel a little indifferent to this issue simply because it just seems like a lose/lose.  Manning should play at some point this year, unless he's just not healthy enough.  They're protecting his health, and I would imagine they continue to do so, playoffs be damned.  I hope he comes back.  I traded for him and Reggie Wayne, and I already have Dallas Clark.  I gave up a crummy Jacksonville player and Aaron Rodgers, but if they're in the hunt late in the year, we "could.  Go.  All.  The.  Way!"

Manning may miss half the season

while a great part of me would love to tear into you for being completely and utterly rediculous, I will not. I can see that you have no stomach for dark humor and thats fine.

But the reality of this situation is that Mike Freeman is the single worst sports writer on this site and in a comparative sense, worse then most any other on any mainstream sports media outlet online today. He backs his storys and periodicals with no true facts. He does, rather base his writings on pure speculative observations and he is routinely off base when it comes to the goings on in professional football.

So no I dont think I should be banned from a site for being disgusted by the level of incompetence that a "journalist" as they call him, displays on a daily basis

Manning may miss half the season

Hate to see him injured....happy to see him sit!!!  Could the Colts actually play a season and not win 11 games????  Let all these Colts fans see how it is rooting for a team that doesn't win year in and year out....

Welcome back Mr. Collins..you only thought you were done playing in Nashville!
