The Daily Shoutout: Jets make or break game?

Posted on: October 5, 2011 8:29 am

OPENING HIT: Seems dumb to say so early in the year. Plus, the phrase make or break is annoying so I apologize for using it. But hear me out on this. The Jets need to win this game or they're in deep trouble.

This is why. The Jets are 2-2. If they lose to the Patriots they fall to 2-3 with Miami on deck. Since everyone and grandma beats Miami this year, the Jets probably win that contest and go to 3-3. Then it gets real interesting for them.

They're home against San Diego, at the Bills, home against New England, then at Denver, home against Buffalo and then at the Washington Grossmans. That is a nasty schedule. Brutal, actually.

Those games could either way. The Jets are a good team, well coached, lots of talent but the way they've been playing I could easily see the team splitting those games and heading into the final stretch of the season hovering around .500 and facing games in their final four against the Eagles and Giants. Again, brutal.

Or Rex Ryan, as he has done before, pulls a coaching rabbit out of his helmet and the Jets make one of their runs. That's possible as well.

Which is why this New England game is so crucial. A win would provide momentum and confidence. A loss could do the opposite especially after that ugly loss to Baltimore in which the Jets looked bullied and disorganized.

maybe saying make or break (ugh) is hyperbole but this game will go a long way to determining their season.

Jets have zero running game. Whay don't they let McKnight take some carries? Have they given him a shot? Shonn Greene looks slow to the hole and slow if he finds one.

How is the schedule of having Miami, the Bills twice, Denver, and Washington sandwiched around two games with the Pats a brutal schedule?!? I'm sorry I just can't buy into any of those four teams being better than the Jets. They could prove me wrong, but I'm betting by the end of the year, the Bills have won no more than 6 games, the Broncos will be lucky to get 5, and Washington.. i know they have already won 3 games, but I don't think they'll win more than 6 either. Don't be fooled people.. the Jets may not have done much yet, and will likely lose their week to New England, but they'll go into cruise control after that, mark my words. (and for the record, I can't stand the Jets, and would love to see them fail).

I think its a little early to be writing the Jets off. I am sure that Rex will get them to come around by November. BB always says its what your doing in November not what your doing in September that counts.

I think this is where all the big talk makes them look a little stupid when they hit a bad streak, but thats just me.

The Jets are bad on offense mainly because of zero, zero, running game. Sanchez is over-rated, but a servicable QB with a decent supporting cast. LT is on his last legs and Shonn Greene is looking more and more like he just doesn't have it. Lets see, they lose to NE, beat Miami, lose to SD, lose to the newly resurgent Bills, lose to Belichick again, beat Denver, beat the bills and beat the Rexskins. That'll put them at 6-6, about where they should be. They're a decent team, middle of the pack until they can help Sanchez with a running game.

What, mid-week leading up to a Pats-Jets showdown, and Big Rex or one of his playuhs hasn't said anything stupid to the press yet?  Where are the taunts, threats and guarantees?
Excellent point.  Usually they talk when they're confident, and they have backed it up in the past.  But they are silent now, does that mean they know they suck?

Personally I think if they lose this game, they very well might go into a tailspin and not recover.  This team could easily finish 2-14 with Sanchez "leading" a professional NFL offense.  Joe Flacco is utterly incompetent and quite possibly the worst QB in the league in a big game or pressure situation.  He tried to give that game away, but Sanchez is a wily veteran of failure at this point in his career, and outdueled him.  That could have been a Luck Bowl last Sunday, at least that is what I think Sanchez went out there to do, to attempt to lose the game.

The Jets should just let Sanchez throw the ball 40 times a game and then draft Luck after losing the rest of the way.  The reason for this is twofold.  One is if Sanchez actually doesn't suck, you want to find that out by forcing him to show everything he has.  The other is if he does suck, this is the year to fail and start over.  Suck for Luck baby.

Yes I am serious, the Jets are awful.  They can get maybe a split with the Dolphins and that is it.

The Jets have ZERO chances of winning a title with Mark Sanchez at QB. He is posibly the most overrated QB since Jamarcus Russell.

I agree, the Jets are 2-2 and a loss this week doesn't take them out of the race. I think the obsevation by most is the poor play that has surfaced this year so far, the Jets always played solid team ball and were able to overcome the shortcomings of Sanchez. This season Sanchez looks to have taken a step back and it's unfortunate with the talent on this team that the QB doesn't appear to be progressing. Rex has these guys ready every week and there is no quit. The questions have plenty of time to be answered this early on but it's definitely a cause for concern to see the offense looking so pedestrian at this point. Winning in New England is a tall task given their home record over the past few years, but a loss won't end the Jets season.

The Daily Shoutout: Jets make or break game?

It's an important game, but losing this game isn't going to ruin the season and I agree its dumb to say so early in the year.  It is still early and for the Jets to look at a make-or-break game against the Patriots (in New England) is a recipe for disaster.
