Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Posted on: October 8, 2011 10:36 am

The first time I met Al Davis was the early 1990s. I had just started covering the NFL and asked for an interview. He had refused for months and then granted a brief one. Some of the first words out of his mouth were these: "Don't believe every lie the league office says about me."

For much of his brilliant, chaotic and unreal life, Al Davis was at war. He fought commissioners. He fought other owners. He fought cities. He tussled with mayors and politicians and his own players. He earned a reputation as a crazy man.

But for those of you who don't know, do not let that deter from what Davis did. The NFL you see today? The multi-billion dollar league? The great league? The biggest, the baddest? Al Davis helped to build it. In many ways, it can be argued, few were bigger at making the sport what it is now.

He modernized the passing game. He made marketing a part of being an owner. He hired minorities to be coaches when other owners refused.

Al Davis was, in short, a brilliant man.

Never forget that. Never, ever forget that.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Al Davis should have turned the Raiders over ten years ago? That would be the year that Gruden's team got ganked out of the playoffs with the contoversial "Tuck" rule. the next year they went to the Super Bowl.  They lost thanks to their center, Barrett Robbins, going AWOL, and Gruden outcoaching his former team, but they were there. Then the Raiders went downhill while Davis played musical chairs with his head coaches. No team holds magic forever. Al's magic just ran out. Rest in peace, Mr. Davis. Your contribution to the sport was tremendous.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

I'm a Buccaneer fan, but I'm also a fan of the NFL and one who enjoys NFL history.  One of the greats passed into NFL History today with the passing of Al Davis, and the NFL is a little lesser place for his passing.

There are few owners in the game that are larger than life, but Davis was one of them.  Outside of Jerry Jones in Dallas, he has probably meant more to his team and his fans than any other owner.  Always a maverick, he made the NFL a better league because he was there.  Regardless of the fact that perhaps he should have turned over the GM reigns 10 years ago and changed his head coaches like I change my underwear, the man has built winning teams.  In my youth, the silver and black was one of the best teams in football, year in and year out.  Those were the Raiders of John Madden and Tom Flores, and they always had a great team on the field every year.

Al Davis, rest in peace.  As a fan of the NFL, I will miss you.

Now that this cook has kicked the bucket, maybe the Raiders will get back to respectability. The old man hung on way too long, kind of like an aging player.

Only thing missing is his surviving kin....way to put in some effort to write a good article about someone you say is so great. Sucks when you only write something cause you have to. At least thats how i'd rate this piece.

We loved to hate you, Al.  And because of that, the NFL was a better place.  RIP.
