Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Posted on: October 8, 2011 10:36 am

The first time I met Al Davis was the early 1990s. I had just started covering the NFL and asked for an interview. He had refused for months and then granted a brief one. Some of the first words out of his mouth were these: "Don't believe every lie the league office says about me."

For much of his brilliant, chaotic and unreal life, Al Davis was at war. He fought commissioners. He fought other owners. He fought cities. He tussled with mayors and politicians and his own players. He earned a reputation as a crazy man.

But for those of you who don't know, do not let that deter from what Davis did. The NFL you see today? The multi-billion dollar league? The great league? The biggest, the baddest? Al Davis helped to build it. In many ways, it can be argued, few were bigger at making the sport what it is now.

He modernized the passing game. He made marketing a part of being an owner. He hired minorities to be coaches when other owners refused.

Al Davis was, in short, a brilliant man.

Never forget that. Never, ever forget that.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Another Bronco fan - we'll miss you Al!

We despised you as you beat us - we relished defeating you - and most of us admired you.
You helped make football what it is. I hope the NFL looks at your history, innovation and quirkiness. They need some of that back. Bring back the fun… the rivalry and the win at all cost spirit you demonstrated. The (N.o) (F.un) (L.eague) needs more Al Davis’s

You did it your way, were very successful and we will truly miss rooting against you.

RIP…. our prayers are with your family..

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

I live in Oakland hills....look down at the staduim, it won't be the same. I've followed the silver & black since the Frank Youell Field and the AFL days. You said it...the NFL is what it is today because of Al Davis and the other AFL owners. One of my early memories about Al was walking out to 50 yard line after Fred Belitnikoff's last college game and signing him right there and then to an Oakland Raider contract!! No it won't be the same...RIP Al

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Al made the NFL fun years ago, but for the past 15 or so, he has made the Raders very un-fun. Glad he is no longer part of the organization, too bad it had to take his passing to get his mits off the team.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

If you love the NFL today, you owe some thanks to Al Davis.  He made it interesting that is for sure.  As a Chiefs fan, hating the Raiders just got a bit less fun and I mean that as a compliment to Al.  RIP

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Well, well, well.   It will be interesting to see how this team is run and who gets playing time now.  Al Davis was a pioneer and visionary ... only his visions were in constant battle with others.  He definitely made his mark in the NFL but the question bears asking.  Did he run things for too long?

People will see the world will be a different place without him.  Especially in the bay area.
