Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Posted on: October 8, 2011 10:36 am

The first time I met Al Davis was the early 1990s. I had just started covering the NFL and asked for an interview. He had refused for months and then granted a brief one. Some of the first words out of his mouth were these: "Don't believe every lie the league office says about me."

For much of his brilliant, chaotic and unreal life, Al Davis was at war. He fought commissioners. He fought other owners. He fought cities. He tussled with mayors and politicians and his own players. He earned a reputation as a crazy man.

But for those of you who don't know, do not let that deter from what Davis did. The NFL you see today? The multi-billion dollar league? The great league? The biggest, the baddest? Al Davis helped to build it. In many ways, it can be argued, few were bigger at making the sport what it is now.

He modernized the passing game. He made marketing a part of being an owner. He hired minorities to be coaches when other owners refused.

Al Davis was, in short, a brilliant man.

Never forget that. Never, ever forget that.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

The great league? The biggest, the baddest?
Yes and yes to both of those questions. The National Football League in a nutshell is awesome.
For much of his brilliant, chaotic and unreal life, Al Davis was at war. He fought commissioners. He fought other owners. He fought cities. He tussled with mayors and politicians and his own players. He earned a reputation as a crazy man.
He hired minorities to be coaches when other owners refused.
Because of his combative personality this is why in my opinion that the league chose to go the safe route and name the legaue's policy on minority hirings "The Rooney Rule" and not "The Davis Rule".
Al Davis was, in short, a brilliant man.

Never forget that. Never, ever forget that.
Never ever will. Rest in peace Mr. Al Davis.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

It's mind boggling an Eagles fan calling another team a loser.  You look up in the dictionary of loser teams and organizations.. and an eagles emblem is staring right back at you.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

Broncos fan here.  I can't tell you how many times I've taken shots at Al Davis "the Raiders Owner" but I can tell you that I've always admired Al Davis "the NFL Legend" for what he contributed to making the NFL what it is today.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Davis family and members of the Raiders family.  Truly an innavator!

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

I have watched the NFL for 48 years and Mr. Davis was indeed a royal pain in the ass but also one of the main reasons the NFL is the NFL we see today. There is not an owner, coach or player out there that does not owe Mr. Davis a sincere debt of gratitude. For you younger fans that only remember the CRAZY AL, I beg that you will look up his biography and learn to understand the man and his acomplishments.

Al Davis helped make the NFL great

We always had something to say about Al Davis.  Good or bad we were talking about him and there is a reason for that, he was someone who got things done and didn't really care what you thought.

I remember when he said he was moving the Raiders out of Oakland, we all thought he was crazy and that the NFL would stop him.  Turns out you couldn't stop Al Davis.  Then he decided after years of being in Los Angeles, he would move back to Oakland.  Wow this guy had had some nerve but hey guess what, the cities weren't supporting the team and the NFL wouldn't do anything about it either.

Mr. Davis did what alot of others are afraid to and we appreciated that as football fans, thank you.

As a Broncos fan who hated almost everything about the Raiders, I still loved Al Davis.  RIP, Al was great for football.  He will be missed.
