I wrote after the Jets-Patriots game, after Derrick Mason was basically benched, the Jets would either keep benching Mason or cut him altogether. I didn't mention the other option: a trade.

I've confirmed a Houston Chronicle report that Mason was traded from the Jets to Houston. I've been told it's a low round pick. The newspaper reported it was a conditional pick.

This move has some interesting ramifications:

1. Is Andre Johnson's hamstring healing slower than expected? Or are the Texans simply looking for more depth? Maybe it's a combination of the two.

2. Rex Ryan is making a statement to his team. And I don't care if he says publicly Mason was benched to get other players reps. No way. Mason was sent packing because he publicly complained about the offense.

3. Mason is actually in a better place. He goes to an offense light years ahead of New York's.

4. Mason may have failed with the Jets but I get the feeling he'll do pretty well with the Texans.

Looking up Mason's numbers, they're actually a lot better than I anticipated.  To me, he seems like an anemic old man that has never really had major production, but maybe he's better than that.  But still, it's hard to imagine that he's not at the end of the road.  While not a Jets fan, I think Rex has the right idea, making an example out of a guy who could become a locker room cancer.

Trade Burress too. This is a young man's game at WR. Speed is what makes the top teams viable offensively. I KNEW signing Mason and Burress was a huge mistake by the Jets brass. 35 year old possession WR's who do not get separation are becoming obsolete. Still wish the kept Cotchery and Edwards. Edwards was looking for 3.5 million and was successful in our offense. Yet, the brass saw fit to give a mid 30's possession WR 3 million after two years in the State Pen.

Maybe the Jets will be using Jeremy Kerley more. Looks like he's got good speed. In today's game, speed can't hurt you. Well, as long as the guy can play, and they'll find out.

This sounds a lot like the Texans are worried that the injury to Johnson is more serious then they are reporting.  Or they realize that Jacoby Jones is not an answer to replace anyone.  If this is just an insurance policy, it will be interesting to see if Mason can fill the role of a solid number 2 receiver once Johnson returns.

Guessing you are right, maybe as an insurance to Andre Johnson's hamstring injury, it looks like it might take it a little longer for a comeback if they are desperate to use a a draft pick. Also a concern for the Texans is on their defense as Mario Williams is done for the year. And it looks like it will be Brooks Reed to start for them.

Derrick Mason traded

Wow, Mason has really fallen off. Dude should probably retire at the end of the year.
