Many NFL scouts won't miss Paterno

One NFC scout was asked how he felt about Joe Paterno leaving.

"I hate to see any of this stuff happening," the scout said, "but people in my line of work won't miss him."

The reason? Paterno was notorious for his abuse of scouts and personnel men who tried to interview players or the staff in preparation for the NFL draft and free agency.

None of this stuff compares to the grand ugliness that happened at the school regarding molestation charges but it does open a small window -- a tiny one -- into how tight control Paterno had at the school.

It wasn't unusual for scouts to set up an appointment to speak with a player or group of players, or even Paterno himself, only to find after traveling to campus Paterno would cancel all appointments.

Eventually, I'm told, scouts were only allowed to come on certain open dates. Sometimes they'd be allowed to watch practice, sometimes not. Paterno had his favorites and would let certain scouts he liked or thought were friends of the program have better access to the team than others.

"Penn State was one of the worst places to try and do your job," said the scout.

Dan Shonka, a former scout, tweeted recently: "I have received several e-mails from retired and present #NFL scouts that reminded me that #JoePaterno hindered us from doing our job at #PennSt How so? #CoachPaterno had a rule that scouts could only visit on open dates and watching prospects during practice was not allowed. Many #scouts blame #PennSt busts over the years on the lack of info #CoachPaterno let out..."

Many NFL scouts won't miss Paterno

This is a good and relevant article. Details should be known about the kind of person Paterno really is. If you just went by the Penn State fans' idol worship of Paterno as God, you wouldn't think that he would be capable of the kind of cover-up that he has perpetrated. This is a bad man, folks. They are all bad, evil men.

This is called piling on, and it's bad journalism.  Paterno's treatment of scouts has absolutely nothing to do with his firing.  And if you want to write an expose' on Paterno's treatment of scouts, how about getting the perspective of a lot more scouts and allowing Paterno to respond to why he treated scouts the way he did?  That would be journalism.

And even more so it is obvious that Paterno is the scapegoat for Penn State. They aren't even going to fire or ask the guy who actually witnessed it to step down. Really? So the eyewitness can keep his job and the guy who has been on the staff for 33 years and actually replaced Sandusky gets to keep his job. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm shocked how many of you people on here act like you support all these decisions and just ignore that they are just outing people so some of the radical nutcases I've seen on these boards and elsewhere will chill for a bit.

Finally, some perspective. This shouldn't be about abused children and a predatory coach protected by an impotent leader. This is about talent scouts and their ability to feed the NFL machine that entertains America. Next thing you know, they're gonna take a closer look at those child pageants where mother's dress their 5 year olds like a Brittany Spears hooker. Lord knows, we can't put those companies that make fake boobs for children out of business. - Global warming may not be happening fast enough to save us from ourselves....

That is hearsay.  I guy who witnessed it, should have gone to the police.  After an investigation, the police said they did not have enough evidence.  Nothing from this whole circumstance is good, but JoePa is the scapegoat.
Heresay has absolutely nothing to do with a police criminal investigation.  Someone needs to stop watching so many criminal TV shows.  Heresay is not applicable IN COURT and is ruled upon by a judge.  Recounting allegations told to you by another person to your local police department takes nothing but a phone call.  If they find that there is no merit to such "stories," then they normally go about their business.  But yeah you can take secod hand information to the police any day of the week. Hell, how do you think they get three-fourths of the info they pursue?  You think these sleuths actually start the ball rolling most of the time?
