The Daily Shoutout: Schottenheimer in trouble?

Posted on: November 18, 2011 7:41 am

OPENING HIT: I rarely, if ever, call for a coach to get fired. I won't now. But one thing is becoming increasingly clear with the Jets' offensive troubles: offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will probably get canned if the Jets don't make the playoffs.

There's going to be a scapegoat for all of this if the Jets continue to struggle and I don't think, unlike past years, the Jets are going to turn their season around. Sure, Mark Sanchez deserves some of the blame for this debacle, and the wide receiver turnover has been a problem, and there is no running game to speak of, but none of that will matter. There's going to be a fall coach and it will be Schottenheimer.

He's the logical choice. There are moments when you watch his play-calling and are absolutely quizzical over what he's trying to do. Fan reaction to Schottenheimer has ranged from anger to full-throated rage and we know the players have some questions about him. And if Rex Ryan fails to make the playoffs after promising (yet again) another Super Bowl, he's going to feel the pinch to take the pressure off his own backside.

If the Jets make another one of those miracle runs this is all moot. But it's hard to see that coming now and if it didn't it would be hard envisoning Schottenheimer returning.

The Daily Shoutout: Schottenheimer in trouble?

Schottenheimer has been terrible since before Rex and Sanchez got here.  He was retained when Rex was hired to keep continuity, which at the time seemed like a good idea, but regardless of playoff runs this guy cannot game plan or handle in game issues that come up.  He has needed to go for years and it has become almost a joke that he is still here and will probably be here longer than Rex.

Sanchez barely started a game in college then was thrust into the starting lineup immediately after the draft.  Please name a QB that has succeeded under those circumstances?  The Jets running attack was once dominant but that has slipped each year until finally they have a terrible attack.  The Jet WRs have changed almost yearly.  Name a young QB that has succeeded with the turnstyle at WR?  Add in that he has to deal with a terrible offensive coordinator and you realize that we have no idea how good or bad this guy can be.

The Jets lost to the Broncos because their offensive game plan (if you can even call it that) was terrible.  Even so, the Jet defense had a chance to win the game but gave up a 95 yd TD drive.  Why is Rex not being lambasted for that drive?  The clock was on their side.  They had a team that was not going to throw the ball but some how let them walk down the field.  When I saw the big blitz I knew it was over.  A big blitz with under a minute left?!?  At that point, a good coach recognizes that a tie is better than losing so play the clock and get them to kick a FG.

Shoddy offense

A one dimensional OC with a Pac10 QB in a high IQ division spells trouble for J E T S fans. Best bet is to draft an RB, sign a new QB and roll the dice for next year.

I think this is just Sanchez's fault and also the injury problems

The play calling has been horrible but at the end of the day Sanchez is a game manager and he won't lead you to the promise land. Shonn Greene issn't helping with not being able to run the ball and being a bust so far besides a lucky rookie season. He is a full back and not a lead RB. But in the end Rex is responsible for this team and if they fail again it will be time for him to look in the mirrow and make some changes or in fact get canned himself and get Bill Coward in there to turn things around. And last but not least how about the great Jets defense living up to potential! It will never be achieved until they get some real pass rushers in there period!!

All the "experts" were complaining about the consevative offensive gameplan against the Broncos but it's not just Schottenheimer.  Sanchez got sacked on his 1st dropback of the game.  Denver's pash rush is formidable.  Rex also knows that Sanchez can't consistently carry the offense.  This team also lacks weapons. They refused to address the offense in the offseason and now it's showing.  No playoffs for the JETS.

When offense sucks and he is in charge of it? Do we say more he isn't very good fire him and get someone better. After the season at this point but Jets will not win Super Bowl with him running offense. Sanchez can be better but not woith him as the coach.

I contend that for all the promises that Rex has made that he should be on the hook also if that Jets don't make the playoffs.  The play calling by Schottenheimer is just awful but isn't it's Rex's defense that gave up the winning TD. It might be a good lesson for Rex and the Jets to not make the playoff and eat some humble pie for once. Maybe Jets fan

It wasn't Schottenheimer's fault.Mark Sanchez's decision making was so bad. He's not a good QB for the Jets,I really don't know why the Jets pick him during the drafting. They Should pick Stafford over him or McCoy.Woody is right that Sanchez is getting backward instead going forward like Eli Manning he's getting better, and better. But sanchez going bad. So,don't blame Shotty , blame Sanchez,he should listen what shotty what to do on the fields.Even the Jets fired Shotty the Jets still not going to Super bowl if there QB is Sanchez. He's terrible.Sorry guys just my opinion because i love the Jets and i want them to go to Super bowl.I wish ryan should think to pick a good QB on draft day.

Schottenhiemer should've been axed with Mangini after the whole Favre debacle.  You can blame the players execution all you want, but Schotty is notorious for calling a weak and predictable game.  It's time to part ways with Schottenhiemer and hand off the OC job to assistand head coach Bill Callahan.  Callahan ran one of the most potent offenses in the last 10 years... and that was with Rich Gannon at QB.
