The Daily Shoutout: NFL coaching firings

OPENING HIT: The coaching changes are coming and possibly large numbers of them. It’s only a matter of if they happen during the season or not.

Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio is gone. Maybe before the end of the season.

San Diego coach Norv Turner is gone, too. Probably at the end of the season.

I continue to hear from league officials that Philadelphia Eagles management don’t necessarily want to fire Andy Reid but they want him to make changes on his staff.

The Miami Dolphins situation has been set for some time. It’s not changing.

Tom Coughlin doesn’t deserve to go – no way – but if the Giants have another collapse he might get the axe.

And if the Colts go 0-16 – a distinct possibility – do they make a change?

There is going to be some coaching talent, albeit flawed, departing and some great coaching talent – Bill Cowher and Les Miles, among others – will be entering.

Coaches in, coaches out. It’s cruel and I hate it but that’s the NFL way.

Perhaps the biggest question of all is that every year there’s a surprise firing.

Who will it be this time?

The Daily Shoutout: NFL coaching firings

I'm a vikings fan & i'm really hoping that Leslie Fraseir gets the axe, and that they find a whole new recieving core, all the recievers on the narket & they could'nt sign one. No wonder they suck this year!

The Daily Shoutout: NFL coaching firings

Let's take a stab at this:

Sparano (Miami) is a goner.  We've known that for most of the season, I think.
Cleveland won't fire the head coach, but they do need to divorce themselves from that horrid offensive scheme.
Del Rio (Jacksonville) was fired a day after this article posted, so that's a done deal.
Caldwell (Indianapolis) is a goner.  He's a total non-factor anyway, and they'll need a fall-guy.  You don't survive an 0-16 year.
Haley (Kansas City) is gone.  The schdule will do him in, fair or not.
Norv Turner (San Diego) is a goner too.  And that one's actually overdue... he under-coached them past their window for years.
Reid will sacrifice his staff to keep his job
Coughlin will probably get another year, as long as they don't lose out completely
Shanahan (Washington) may be the surprise.  His personnel decisions are awful, his son is in over his head, and Snyder isn't real patient to begin with.
Morris gets another season.  This year was a setback, but the management there seems to see it as a long-term project anyway.
Spagnuolo gets one more year, on account of all the injuries and such, despite the regression.
Whisenhunt?  Hard to say, as bad as they've been.  But I think he gets a mulligan based on past success.
That leaves Carroll in Seattle.  I have absolutely no feel or read on that organization at all.  My guess would be that he gets another year, but I really don't know how he is perceived by the fans or front office in Seattle.

So... I'm thinking 6 openings?  That sounds about normal.  Though clearly there could be a lot more if things get ugly for some of the 'one more year' teams on the list.

DEl Rio deserves another year- they salary dumped their starting QB 3 days before start of season and the Jags have been competitve-
Turner needs to go- will end up a OC with Fisher- wherever he lands
Reid will get one more chance
Spags is for sure a goner
Tommy C- needs a real OC- Norv coming to the Big City?
colts will be patient for another year
spags in St louie will get one more year
Pete Carroll will quietly be shown the door.

considering that the Jags have been very competitive with a rookie QB, and the defense is playing solid, I do think Del Rio should get another year. I think Andy and Norv gotta go, if the Colts go 0-16 Caldwell needs to go, theres a lot of talent on that team not named Peyton Manning, and I also feel if the Giants collapse Coughlin will probably be gone. Sparano and Haley should be safe for this year, does anyone else besides me feel that Ken Whisenhunt also needs to be considered on this list?

If the Giants do not make the playoffs, I say Tom Coughlin goes and Bill Cowher becomes the next NY Giants head coach!!

3 more losses and your surprise firing will be Raheem Morris of the Buccaneers.
I agree with that too. This was supposed to be their season to really be a contender in the AFC South. Not with that offense, the defense has been pretty much what has given them every opportunity to win in the close games.

Jack Del Rio. Gone.
Norv Turner. Gone.
Andy Reid. He'll get another year and then he's gone.
Tony Sparano. Gone.
Tom Couglin. Needs to go, but will get another year.
I see it that way too. I would've never replaced Schottenheimer with Norv Turner. Talk about getting a winner and just running that into a loser. Del Rio, he's fighting to keep a job that's been rumored to be leaving Jacksonville for years now. Sparano, he might stay if the Dolphins finish strong. Reid, depends upon his contract, but even if the Eagles wind up 6-10, Reid has necer had back to back losers in Philly. Coughlin, the Giants are a team that has 2 Super Bowl appearances, 1-1 in them since 2000. And if Giants can kepp having the seasons they have and getting to Super Bowls, it's a tribute to Coughlin. Anyway, if Rams fire Spagnuolo, Reid needs to jump on that, hire Spags as d-coord, if he really must keep Castillo around, let the guy that Reid coaxed to give up retirement after he retired as Colts OL coach, but put Castillo back over there ? I personally would let Castillo go period. Washburn is arguing with Morningwheg, I have zero respect for Castillo as DC, bet his players have more for Washburn than they do Castillo ?

3 more losses and your surprise firing will be Raheem Morris of the Buccaneers.  The Glazers were patient and kind in '09.  With a stadium that's only 1/2 filled, a 100,000+ season ticket waiting list evaporated into thin air, and a team regessing, they have shown they aren't all that patient and won't hesitate to let the axe fall...
