Pats assistant O'Brien to coach Penn State

Posted on: January 5, 2012 10:17 pm

It's still stunning that it's true but it's true: a Patriots team source confirms that Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien has agreed to become the coach of Penn State.

It's rare for an NFL coordinator to make this type of move. It's happened before even with the Patriots but it's still rare. Most assistants like O'Brien want to become head football coaches in the NFL not college.

O'Brien's move is high risk/high reward. The Penn State job is one of the toughest now in football for obvious reasons. He could easily fail. But imagine if O'Brien turns things around there. He'd be an instant star and would have his picks of many great jobs in the NFL. If he wanted them.

And now the Patriots look for a new offensive coordinator.

An official announcement about O'Brien could come as early as Friday.

My sources in New England say that O'Brien's contract was ending this year and was not going to be renewed by the Patriots. Toss in the fact that Penn State vastly overpaid this guy to take over in State College and you see why he took the gig. The real problem the new Lion head man faces is to somehow convince any decent assistants to relocate in Happy Valley, let alone recruit any talent.

What a dumb hire for Penn State...I figured they'd screw it up.

Let's see, he'll be going from working w/ a future Hall of Fame QB...running an offence that seems to heal itself year after year, no matter who's gets hurt, or who's calling the plays...

...to stepping into the fire at a "Big Time" football factory like PSU...who's last appearance on the bowl stage resulted in a loss to Houston!...and he's going to pick up a badly damaged program and do what with it???...win?...I bet Temple beats them finally in 2012.  I think he's out of his depth thinking he can recruit, repair, and guide the Lions to anything but threading water, if he gets lucky...

His direct participation w/ the Duke program resulted in a 2-22 record.  That ain't gonna get it done in Happy Valley.

It's a no win IMO.He will never be accepted there but then no one would. On a side note all of Pats assistents have been pretty to really bad in their next job.

This is a no lose situation for O"Brien......if he fails it is because the situation was just too big to succeed if he succeeds he can write his own ticket anywhere.....

It seems to be a problem in football in general, some coaches are best when they are positional or assistant coaches, for some reason they just never pan out as head coaches.
The league is full of 2 or 3 year failed attempts.

Can we please look at the list of former NE coordinators who have failed.
Geez, one would think by now the football minds, pro or college would of learned by now.
Good luck Billy, you'll need it.

Can't blame a guy for going after a pile of cash, but in my opinion, he'll be let go in 3 years or less.

I am amazed how Bill Bellichick can keep this team winning year after year. It seems every year the Patriots lose their offensive and defensive coordinators. Most teams that would take this kind of hit would not be as successful.
