Hines Ward to retire?

Posted on: January 9, 2012 10:14 am

Did Hines Ward play his last game? It appears he might have. A Steelers player texted to me the expectations around the team was that Ward would soon announce his retirement. That doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen.

Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year. But for the moment that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ward is clearly done physically. He just doesn't have the burst he once did. He was held without a catch against the Broncos and has become an afterthought in the Pittsburgh offense.

Yet, to me, he's a sure Hall of Famer. He became only the eighth wide receiver to reach 1,000 catches, had a lengthy and productive career, and won championships. He was one of the toughest receivers I've ever seen.

And it appears we've seen the last of Ward in the NFL.

Hines Ward to retire?

It is a shame so many people do not understand what great is. I totally agree with you, he was one of the best ever because he dominated at doing what most of the prima donna, stat only receivers despise... BLOCK. How many wideouts in NFL history were able to block safeties and even linebackers the way he did to help the running game. And he loved to do it even knowing there are no stats for team play like that. If he is retiring then he basically has an entire league that desparately could use his expertise and knowledge. Too bad not too many will have the heart...

Hines Ward to retire?

NO one would put Ward in Rice's category. But you are seriously smoking crack if you think most of those other guys were better than Ward. Sharpe, Brown, Largent? You seriously have no grip on reality if you put those three ahead of him, Brown won't even get into the Hall. But as far as Rice the only receiver you can even consider in his group is Don Hutson, it is those two then everyone else.

Hines Ward to retire?

I agree that Hines Ward is a hall of famer, however no other reciever should be elected into the hall until Cris Carter is elected.  Hand down, he is the next best reciever of his generation behind Jerry Rice.  I don't know why he has been looked over so many time but it seems to me the Hall of Fame committee has a higher standard for receivers than some other positions!!
No disrepect to Hines because he is deserving of this honor.

Hines Ward to retire?

As a Redskin fan I equate Ward to Art Monk.  Not a flashy player, but very steady and dependable, and a class act individual.  There is no question in my mind he will make the HOF.

Hines Ward to retire?

king I concede you can spell behavior that way if you wish, but no one outside of GB ever does. Regardless, you are an idiot. I do however wish I was 15 years away from 40 still, those were the good old days.

Hines Ward to retire?

With the talent that is out there, we have not seen the last of Hines Ward.  I am not a Steeler fan but if you were watching, Big Ben was a little off this year and maybe it was his ankle.  I could have sworn I saw him throw interceptions that he had no business throwing.

There are younger receivers on the Steelers these days and maybe Hines Ward isn't open because the Defense's are focused on him and not the other wideouts.

Until there is a source that has a name or Ward comes out and states he is retiring, could you write about the business at hand...NFL playoffs.  In the Steeler/Bronco game, Ward wasn't even noteworthy.  The O-Line and the QB have issues and you are talking about Ward.  I heard the Rams are moving but until that is done deal, would rather discuss what is really happening.
