Hines Ward to retire?

Posted on: January 9, 2012 10:14 am

Did Hines Ward play his last game? It appears he might have. A Steelers player texted to me the expectations around the team was that Ward would soon announce his retirement. That doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen.

Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year. But for the moment that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ward is clearly done physically. He just doesn't have the burst he once did. He was held without a catch against the Broncos and has become an afterthought in the Pittsburgh offense.

Yet, to me, he's a sure Hall of Famer. He became only the eighth wide receiver to reach 1,000 catches, had a lengthy and productive career, and won championships. He was one of the toughest receivers I've ever seen.

And it appears we've seen the last of Ward in the NFL.

Hines Ward to retire?

Can't wait to see the haters when Hines gets in. Face it he's a Steeler, one of the most popular teams in NFL history. He is a 2 time SB champ including SB MVP. He has 1,000 catches, he's a lock. It won't be first ballot but he'll get in regardless.

Hines Ward to retire?

How many SB victories did Branch or Carter have?  How many SB MVP's?  Ward is a lock for Canton - get over it.

Hines Ward to retire?

Boxer you totally misconstrued my comments.  I'm not comparing Tebow to Farve in terms of quarterback skills, throwing arm, or anything of the sort, especially not the poished qb Farve evolved into.  This is my point.  Farve's first couple of years as the starter for Green Bay were not pretty.  They ran a very conservative and safe offense, and he struggled at times, and it was ugly at times, but they won.  He did not look anything like the Brett Farve that went to 2 Superbowls and however many NFC championship games, but they won.  Farve was a winner from day one, and he always had a big smile on his face, he loved the game and it showed.  In that respect Tebow reminds me of the young Brett Farve.  Will Tebow have a career like Farve?  I can not say, but he is winning now, albeit ugly wins, and he loves the game, and I see now reason why he can't get better as a quarter back, just like Farve did.

Happy Retirement Hines "Crack Back" Ward.  Your blindsided hits on defenders won't be missed, by me at least
