Hines Ward to retire?

Posted on: January 9, 2012 10:14 am

Did Hines Ward play his last game? It appears he might have. A Steelers player texted to me the expectations around the team was that Ward would soon announce his retirement. That doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen.

Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year. But for the moment that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ward is clearly done physically. He just doesn't have the burst he once did. He was held without a catch against the Broncos and has become an afterthought in the Pittsburgh offense.

Yet, to me, he's a sure Hall of Famer. He became only the eighth wide receiver to reach 1,000 catches, had a lengthy and productive career, and won championships. He was one of the toughest receivers I've ever seen.

And it appears we've seen the last of Ward in the NFL.

Hines Ward to retire?

It's time for Hines to go, unfortunatly. Besides being a shell of his Probowl self, the cap room he will free up will be needed to sign Wallace and Brown in the near future. As for the HOF, his stats are good enough and the SB MVP he has should put him over the top.  Hopefully he will be joining Bettis and Dawson, both on the ballot this year. Go Steelers.

Hines Ward to retire?

Few players that ever played the game had the courage of Hinz Ward. His ability to catch the ball over the middle was second to none. I imagine that the players that played with this guy, and against him, respected his toughness. Tip of the cap to an outstanding career. HOF? Doubtful, but he could play on my team any day.

Hines Ward to retire?

And why am I posting Favre and Tebow on a page about Hines Ward???
My bad...

Hines Ward is tough as nails - didn't complain when asked to take a backseat to some younger and more athletic talent - best blocker I have ever seen at WR.  Great career and congrats.

Hines Ward to retire?

Won't be the same without 86. Best WR in NFL History.
Put down the pipe and wake up Black n Gold Pusse.

Hines Ward is/was a good WR but the best ever? He isn't even top 10.

Hines Ward to retire?

Did you actually just compare TeBlow with Brett Farve????  If you believe in God, go see Him.  Turn in your oxygen card.  Anybody that could post something that ridiculous should not be allowed to waste our precious resources.
Boxer3jim - it might be time for you to take a deep breath.  You disagree with someone's post and then order him to die...that's interesting reasoning.  I read his post - he didn't say they were the same player or that Tebow was or ever will be as good (I don't think anyone really thinks that) - he said he struggled and still has won...just as Favre had some early struggles and still won - doesn't mean they have the same stats or are the same player or are even comparable in talent.

Hines Ward to retire?

Steele0726, You have blinders on and are a homer and thats ok. Steelers fans think Hines ward is a much better player than he is. I understand the homer opinion. Again, Ward was a very good player for a very long time. He did a good job compiling stats. But can you tell me when he was dominant? He had a year or two where he was in the top 5 of a few statistical categories. Is that all it takes to be in the HOF? I thought the HOF was for great players that were at or near the top of their position for a long time. Not good players that had one great year and a bunch or good or decent years. Maybe I'm wrong and good players will be allowed in the HOF.

Hines Ward to retire?

He was a very good player, but not a great player.  I think Ward s borderline HOF.  Even during the era he played - I wouldn't consider him elite when you had players like Marvin Harrison, Tim Brown, Terrell Ownes, Randy Moss, & Isaac Bruce in his early part of his career and later you got players like Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, and Andre Johnson.

Hines Ward to retire?

About time. The guy's been a shell for at least the past 3 years. He doesn't even dish out cheap shots anymore. Great career but no chance in hell he's a HOFer.

Hines Ward to retire?

Remember how profootball talk said a reliable source told them that LeBeau was going to retire after that dominating 2008 season?  You'd think by now folks in the media might be hesitant to announce retirements before they happen.
