Hines Ward to retire?

Posted on: January 9, 2012 10:14 am

Did Hines Ward play his last game? It appears he might have. A Steelers player texted to me the expectations around the team was that Ward would soon announce his retirement. That doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen.

Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year. But for the moment that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ward is clearly done physically. He just doesn't have the burst he once did. He was held without a catch against the Broncos and has become an afterthought in the Pittsburgh offense.

Yet, to me, he's a sure Hall of Famer. He became only the eighth wide receiver to reach 1,000 catches, had a lengthy and productive career, and won championships. He was one of the toughest receivers I've ever seen.

And it appears we've seen the last of Ward in the NFL.

Hines Ward to retire?

His Facebook page says he's NOT retiring.  I think that's sufficient.  But it'll take a major restructure to keep him in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh isn't in Central Pa. We are not in England. There is nothing redneck about Pittsburgh. You say Ward is a deserving Hall of Famer but not a great player? You have proved your stupidity many times over.

Hines Ward to retire?

As a life-long Pats fan, Hines was one of a very few WR's who I dreaded to see on the field (other than Marvin Harrison).  His ability to get the first down was frustrating to say the least, and his physical strength provided them with an extra offensive lineman in the run game, which caused many DB's to wish for more passing plays!  He will be missed, but age and injuries is no respector of persons.  You played old-school Mr. Ward; and for that I salute you.  I never liked you, but I will salute you!

MPA you're ridiculous.  Hines Ward was a great WR during his career and was one of the best blockin receivers I had ever seen.  Plus you never heard about him being a diva like some of the receivers we see today.  He's definitely going to be a HOF inductee.

Hines Ward to retire?

HOF no way?

he laeds the steelers in every career recieving category which means hes ahead of lynn swann and john stallworth , who are both in the hall of fame,  2 time superbowl winner MVP of one of them and in the top 15 in virtually every recieving category,  lets not forget to mention that he was a 3rd round pick who wasnt even a full time reciever untill the NFL, he is 6 feet tall, 200 lbs, probably runs a 5 second 40, not exactly a physical specimen but was one of the toughest players of all time.  To say that he is anything less than a sure bet for the HOF is ludicroius and really shows how litlle some fans know about the gaem

Lets see...18th in all-time recieving yardage. 13th in tds. Yes he makes the Hall. But no way do you put him in Rice, Moss's class. You just can't. He wasnt as good. The SB's really don't mean as much to me because this is a team sport. And like what a few of you have said he was a great player than he was a person. His blocking skill were better than most. But his team was better than most. And that to me tells me was just a little better than average. What he does off the field dont matter to me and shouldnt matter in the hall voters either. On another note...he was with one team and only one team and loyalty is huge. Hof'er yes!
